Speaking as a Newbie - but have been reading for some time- decided I'd like to join because after just reading for such a time found that the OS group are consistantly very friendly and helpful to all. Think it takes a time to get to 'know' people but definately feel its been beneficial to me so far-looking forward to lots more advice etc etc...0

As you can all see I haven been on here long, and I post in the arms all the time, rarly post any where else. What ever you do don't be affraid of posting any where. If you want make freinds on here its easy, and we're not that bad in the arms, but can get out of hand at times.I maybe flirtatious. So please bare with me.:D0 -
I think that the quickest way for a newbie to feel at home is to have a scan through the 'getting to know you' sticky, it helps flesh out the names and you can see where people are coming from with their opinions and ideas.
If you first walk into a room full of people that all know each other you are bound to feel a little on the outside of things but when you know their names and a liitle bit about their lives you can identify with them, and them with you and pretty soon you relax into the conversation.
It was curiosity about who the regulars were that prompted me to start the thread about 2 or 3 weeks after I first joined and it's grown from there.
edited - I have to add a little postscript to this.
MATH is a breath of fresh air, he writes with such a light and also lighthearted touch and I know that he would never seek to offend and I was surprised to see that his welcoming post was misunderstood.0 -
Well I have only recently started reading and posting on the OS board and although I have posted some of the most boring and repetative questions I have only ever been offered friendly helpful advice in abundance. Thank you OS peps, for making me feel so welcome, help me sort my pennies out for the new year and also converting me to slow cooker cooking

I've been posting for nearly a year and I've only had my head bitten off once - but I was surprised how bruised I felt even though the other poster probably only felt they were being 'robust'. trouble is if you get that in your first few posts you are more likley to feel excluded. it is pure bad luck because this is genuinely a friendly forum.
I do sometimes wonder though about the thanks button. If there is a fast moving post then very often you find that there is no response at all to what you might have thought was a brilliantly valid point, simply because there are lots of posts after yours. It doesn't mean it's cliquey.
Anyway keep posting - the more people who post the less it seems as if it is dominated by just a fewIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I've been posting for a couple of weeks now-never was a lurker just dived right in-and I've found all my replies to be friendly ,helpful and sometimes very funny.
The problem is that its very difficult to convey 'tone of voice' when you're writing and things you may think are tongue in cheek or jokey don't always come across like that when read on the screen.I find the smilies useful for conveying the intended tone.0 -

I've always found everyone on here to be really helpful. It's a really busy board and I've learnt so much from the people on here. :j
I do have one problem with this board - it's so busy before I get a chance to reply to anyone, the regulars have given a page full of much more helpful replies than I could. :snow_laug0
