  • Hi, this is my first post to this forum, and I think this is an appropriate place to start.

    I have three resolutions:

    1. Pay off my highest interest Student Loan (7.4%) by November 06.
    2. Record *everything* I buy this year, from sewing machines to bottles of water.
    3. Go back to Michigan for Thanksgiving and have the trip paid for in full before I go or by the following credit card statement.

I think the first one should be fine, my loans are in dollars and I can take advantage of the exchange rate, I figure if I "fail" at keeping the journal all year, keeping it for a few months is better than nothing and I've already found flight prices and have started to put away some money :j
I'm an American living in Oxford using the exchange rate to my advantage. (As of 4 Oct 2006: 1USD=1.88GBP)

Debts at highest November 2004: $29,464.51 _pale_

    26 June 2006: Down to $17,701.27
    Private Student Loan: $3,073.61 (7.83%)
US Federal Student Loan: $14,627.66 (5.3%)

    4 October 2006: Down to $11,622.66
Private Student Loan: PAID IN FULL!
US Federal Student Loan: $11,622.66 (5.38%)

Debt Free Date: 27 September 2007, my 25th birthday!

  • Every year I've resolved I'll reduce my debts, but they always seem to get bigger. Most of this is because every time I switch to a 0% card, I quickly use up the balance on the old card again!
This year I've resolved not to spend on credit cards, and pay at least one off in full. Ebay are going to come in useful - I'm selling all my old junk on there and using the profits to pay off debt. Beats cold wet car boot sales!

Happy new year and luck to all moneysavers.
  • New Years resolution? The trouble with me, is as soon as I make a New Years resolution, it is immediately destined to fail!

    However...
I am in the process of shifting a 7K loan from an expensive Cahoot flexible load to a nice cheap fixed rate loan at Nationwide (6.7%). I have put down to pay it back over a 12 month period (£604pcm  ). Since I can make over payments, I hope to have fully repaid it by Xmas 2006 :j .

This is clearly going to be a challenge, but what a great xmas pressie to myself.

    Wish me luck!

    MM.

whilst I am not in debt, but I really do want and need a good second hand car, so again I am going to try to stop the ciggies( did it for 2 months just before xmas) and save that money in my 'special car account'. I will also buy everything on my cash back card(earned#13.00 in Nov/ Dec far more than any points I could have got at tesco using their card, could have enough to go a long way to my goal by the end of the year.
    You live..You learn.:)
  • I've just this morning decided on my New Year debt resolution and it's to get down to half of our highest ever debt total. That means our total debt by Dec 2006 needs to be down to £8,991.

The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics(sic) or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were.
