You think you have problems getting him to take a food flask? I bought my sons a food flask each from Lakeland when I visited last week - problem was that they only had bright pink left!!!! How much convincing will that take to get them to use this!!
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

Carolinerunner - how old is your ds? As I have posted before, my kids had a lot of stick at primary school for taking "weird food" and flasks - but have had no trouble at all at secondary school. In winter they love things like spicy wedges and beans etc.

thrift monster, my ds is 10, last year at primary. tbh I am expecting it to be the other way round. Older DS (14) will only take a ham sarnie. Every day. Nothing else. Eeek! Dr Barnardos will be round soon to take care of him!

Weakened at Mr Ts and bought a camo lunch bag for £5, he is mad into the military at the mo and the hot food flask amazingly will fit into it with room for a drink and something else. Also bought pack of 4 tiny lock n lock type boxes for £3.75, exactly what I wanted for nuts, cherry toms, grapes etc. Spent ages shopping and am only worried I have bought stuff that will end up costing as much as school meals, just off to cost it out...
  • Caroline - when I first started doing this seriously, I had a little notebook where I costed out the whole lunch vs the cost of a school dinner. I always allowed leftovers from the night before as free unless I had deliberately cooked extra. I don't think the cost was ever more than the cost of a dinner (£2.10 @primary and £2.50 @ secondary)

    So today's effort for 2)
2 pieces reduced SF chicken breast from Mr T's deli counter £1.50
    1 reduced little gem - 23p
    4 slices wholegrain bread & butter -30p
    2 reduced tangies - 32p
    2 value wafer biccies - 14p
    2 apple juices - 38p

Total: £2.87 compared with 2 school dinners for £5 (or more - prices have gone up in the canteen)
The kids took the chicken, lettuce and bread separately - but it would have made sandwiches as well.

It took a few minutes to cost it out each day but it really reassured me that I was saving money. It does help that neither are very fussy eaters, are not allowed out of school at lunchtime and have no money on their smart cards!!

Sometimes as a treat they take hot chocolate in their flasks in the winter instead of having a cake or some thing else sugary - hasn't been banned yet:D[/QUOTE]

When my twins started secondary school they use to take a metal flask with hot chocolate in to drink in winter at break and lunch, along with their food from the dinner hall. They were really popular with their friends on cold days especially but not so with the head master who phoned me and said they were not allowed to bring it to school again for health and safety issues, incase they spilt it and scaulded someone .Now that is ok except for as I rightly pointed out what about the teachers who walked around with steaming mugs of tea and coffee.headmaster then informed me that they could have a hot drink if they wished from the drinks vending machine .Where is the sense in that.

Apples are the prepacked ones, as he only eats them cut and obviously they can't do this is school and i don't know how they make them last when pre cut!? Chicken Fridge raiders and cheesestring substitutes also? Any ideas please
