i quite often do kebab type things on sticks, either a fruit one or a savoury one. a few days ago my lad had small bits of sausage, olives, cherry toms and cheese on a stick, it all depends what i have in my fridge. also he takes in cornish pasties/ginsters/sausage rolls sometimes instead of sarnies. pizza pinwheels are easy to make and kids love em, theres a recipe on this site somewhereproper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance!Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat moneyquote from an american indian.0

I try and make sure mine have some meaty protein/carbs/dairy/fruit
- So as you say a ham sandwich
- Or breadsticks and a wee pot of cream cheese (or hummous or something else if they wont eat cream cheese) with salami slices wrapped separately
- Or cocktail sausages with some mini pittas and a yoghurt
(I buy the 50 pack of precooked cocktail sausages in Asda and freeze them in cling filmed portions of 5 sausages)
- Or pittas with ham and swetcorn
- Or tortilla wraps with any wacky combination of carrot/cheese/ham/salami/cucumber/whatever is lying around the fridge!
(This is their favourite)
If there is no cheese in their ,unchbox, or even if there is I give them a yoghurt, and they also have fruit - apple or pear wedges, or even just raisins.
As long as they get one of each of the 4 food groups they don't seem to mind the combinations.Jan GC: £202.65/£450 (as of 4-1-12)

For some reason I was reading this thread and remembered our mum making our packed lunches ( way back in the early 80's) - we had proper school dinners at junior school). We thought at the time she was a bit 'freaky' and used to feel quite embarrassed at our healthy lunches.... different breads, cheeses, yoghurts, 'interesting' sandwiches (i.e.not chocolate spread), veg and fruit - oh and home-made cakes and biscuits.
I remember being so pleased when she occasionally allowed me to take a flask of hot water and a pot noodle, packet of crisps and a wagon wheel like most of the class did.:o
Now my kids have the 'freaky lunches' and they love them! Also they seem to have the same as most children in their class. My mum was DECADES ahead of her time!! Just goes to show....:rotfl: :rotfl:

I'm quite new to this so please be nice
My children eat almost anything (with for some strange reason the exception of cheese) but i am starting to feel like i have gotton into a rut with school packed lunches.
A typical day consists of a sandwich (egg, tuna, ham) yoghurt, fresh fruit (pineapple, apple, orange, blueberries, strawberries etc) a flapjack, cereal bar or a muffin.
Have any of you wonderful people got any ideas to vary the contents? the children haven't complained but i know i would get fed up of the same things week after week.
Thank you in advance, heavenleigh xx

JillD, (or anyone else) how do you defrost the precooked sausages from freezer? I mean can u just defrost and use without having to heat them up? I have a great big bag in ours as it was reduced from Tescos but not used them yet cos I wasn't sure about the defrosting bit.
Thanks0 -
Hi, I've been freezing cooked sausages for years as for ages it was all my son ate. Yes you can just thaw and eat or you can nuke them until hot in the microwave and eat immediately.

My kids go back to school on Wednesday and I desperatly need some ideas for their lunch. Cheap and healthyish (I want them to eat them!!!). Last year their lunchs all seemed to work out quite expensive in the long term. Also added problem is they want it to be something they can eat quickly so that they get more time playing.
Any ideas very gratefully welcomed.0 -
for snacks during break-time those Goodies bars by Organix are really good ('NO JUNK PROMISE' also). There's a lot of new varieties also now. Agreed, they are not particularly cheap but very healthy.BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

There has been quite a few threads on this subject recently over the boards, try doing a search for 'lunch' and it should throw up a few other threads to look at.
My ds will be starting school for the first time on Wednesday as well and I'm lucky as he does like his healthy food which is the opposite to my other two! He seems to like 'picky' things, so I've created a list (inspired by other poster on here!), of things he can choose each day. On Wednesday he said he wants, either a cooked chicken drumstick or fajita'd chicken pieces, couple of slices of wafer thin ham, cubes of cheese, cherry toms, carrot sticks and some dried fruit, it's like a buffet at a party!!DFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0
