  • I've been there and done it with this debate, got myself all heated up and tackled people for parking in a disabled bay just to be abused and told to mind my own business. I've been abused for parking in a bay myself even though I've got a blue badge - I've even been told I looked too young to be disabled! We've had parking tickets even though we've had the blue badge displayed - watch out if you're ever in Edinburgh - they are RUTHLESS.

Being tackled and tackling someone on this issue is always going to be contentious as everyone thinks they are right and you just end up upsetting yourself for no good reason. My approach is now I do what I think is right with parking and I don't reproach anyone else for what they do and leave it up to their conscience (and good old karma with any luck).

I've always felt that if someone parks in the disabled space they either don't care or feel they have a genuine reason to do so and trying to make them see your point of view is just never going to work.

Well, it is Scotland where if you remember they still have free prescriptions and free dentists :D.

Funny though - when you consider that the oldest entrant for the Great North Run this year was 84 and reckons he's not giving up yet :T and good for him!

Oh yes and they never have to worry about forgetting to put their clock out with their badges either .

Should we all move up there then? :rotfl:

    Too bloomin' cold!

Prescriptions and Dentists aren't free in Scotland

i parked in a disabled bay in asda, put my blue badge in the window when i came out i had a ticket, when i complained aparantly the parking attendant issued it because he claimed i was using it illegally because i was too young to be the owner of the badge, hello it has my picture on the back.
complianed to hampshire council who said the ticket was legal, told them to take me to court cause i wasnt paying for it, 8 months later heard nothing yet, this is the fifth ticket they have given me in 2 years,
  • Its frightening isn't it. We have been lucky, so far never had a ticket (quite rightly as we use the badge properly), have parked in Edinburgh near Hard rock cafe and several ASDA shops.
We are young, though DH is obviously disabled with aids so that may help.

Torry Quinne post #154 already pointed out that free scripts haven't yet been introduced - thanks ;) however it's estimated they will be within the next two years. With regard to dental and eye tests though, these are free to all in Scotland :exclamati

They may be a genuine reasons but they are not entitled to park in a blue badge area if they dont display a valid blue badge and the holder is in the car it doesnt have to be the driver.

There is enough bone ideal people who abuse this as it is I am not talking abut genuine users but those who cant be bothered to walk for few extra yards.

Even if you have a health problem/temporary disability (broken leg) you are not entitled to use it as yet although I think that is about to change.

I never realised I had a response till now.

I dont know why you are bringing up bone idle people when quoting my post as I didnt make any reference to those kind of abusers.

But my points were that you, as a customer, have NO IDEA what another customers arrangements are with a supermarket with regards them parking in a disabled bay.
You do not know whether or not someone has a Blue badge or not....even if it is not in their window.

    I can give you examples.

My Mum has a blue badge and we have gone into the supermarket and realised that she hadnt put her badge out. This happened when she was in my car. When she is her own car its left out all the time. So, she forgot. And because she doesnt walk at all we spoke to customer services about it who radioed it in to the carpark guy that we were ok to park as we had a badge.

So...you....nor anyone else knows about that. So why is it your business?

Another example is that even though someone might not have a blue badge, they may have applied for one and are waiting. In the meantime an arrangement can be made with the supermarket. Again, I ask...if they are happy about it, why arent you? Why would someone like you put stickers on my car and do criminal damage??

It is between the supermarket and the person using the space,...NO ONE ELSE!!

Ok...well if you parked in Asda and they gave you a ticket, why did you complain to the council?

Councils are not responsible for supermarket parking.
  • I went to town the other day to buy a few things and couldn't park near where I wanted - the bays were full, and although marked 'disabled' hardly a BB in sight!Sooo I drove back home & bought on line; no wonder the shops and markets are closing down. (I wrote to my local council too).
I so go to town now so infrequently and thats one of the reasons why. Shopping is delivered by Tesco.
  • I'd like to see a system where the car which has parked in a disabled bay without displaying a blue badge has their vehicle details displayed on all the tv monitors in the supermarket coupled with an announcement too.

The problem is no matter how much supermarkets 'request' people not to abuse the system those who really don't care aren't going to take notice. Morrison's is a good case in point - their signs say "please don't abuse this priviledge" (or similar) but do you really think that the person who does abuse this is going to stop doing it because of a sign? I don't think so.

I've even asked supermarket security staff what would happen if I was to park in a disabled bay when I didn't have a blue badge. On both occasions I was told I shouldn't really do it - when I asked if they take any action their response was they don't do it because they end up getting a mouthful of abuse.

What's the point of having any rules in place if you're never going to enforce them.?
