I'm sure if you called your local distribution company, they would have some idea of what is wrong. If there is a large hole in the road, then it's a pretty clear indication that there is a problem with one of the underground cable, and these can take hours, days.... to locate and fix the fault. So it seems that putting you all back on by a generator was the quickest way for the engineers to get your power back on. Until they are able to make a proper repair to the cable.0
