Surely there is a difference between you having a young infant, but saying that he/she is a young baby, just to get the job done quicker/get someone out quicker?

Are you saying "surely there's a difference between actually having a young infant and saying that your older child is a young infant?" I would agree with that. That wasn't what I did. I was just remarking that I have legitimately used "But I have a baby!" to get my heating repaired faster.

The baby was seriously not even a month old at the time. It was truly an urgent situation. :o

  • ah ok, I understand what you meant now!! :-)
  • We've always been told at work that power cuts are not our responsibility. It's the fault of the distributor (national grid) as suppliers are only responsible for the actual meter.

If the meter was faulty, or the supplier cut you off, then you can claim from them. Otherwise you need to ask the national grid about it.

I'm sure Martin says this on his page/..
Pls be nice to all MoneySavers. There's no such thing as a stupid question, and even if you disagree courtesy helps.

THANKS FOR ALL SHOOTING ME DOWN IN FLAMES. I WAS ONLY ASKING WHERE I STAND.

I'm not impressed by some people's responses. Maybe there are reasons that we can't eat at home. We have 2 torches, some small candles and NO computers at home. The whole street of about 70 properties are affected (and still are - we are still on generator).

If you really want to know, I am not happy to keep the food since I have a stomach disorder which means I have to be extremely careful what and when I eat. I'm not happy to take the risk on foods especially food that is in the freezer. Our household insurer has said we can claim through them for the food not a problem.

A bit of courtesy from some people would go a long way!
  • People were merely giving their advice to you. If you didn't appreciate it or agree with it then that's fine.

With regards to the food situation, people made quite valid suggestions, and were not to know you had a stomach disorder which makes you more weary about the food. I mentioned myself that you could've made a sandwich etc, something that doesn't require cooking using elec or gas. To me that is a sensible suggestion.

Do you know why the power went off? If your home insurers are going to pay out then that's great. Glad you got it sorted.
  • We don't know why the power went off. We're still on generator!

Isnt there any kind of presence from the power distribution company i.e men or wimmin in vans, holes being dug,men up poles etc?
  • Well I didn't see any today before going to work but there's a massive hole in the corner of a road and part of a lane of the main road outside our house is closed off.

Suppose they are still "working" on it!

I would be pleasantly suprised to go home soon and find power but no generator...but I seriously doubt it!
  • Generators are generally used as a last resort to restore your power as they cost so much to hire per day. For a generator supplying 70 cust you are looking at £700-£800 per day plus the cost of refueling the generator.

Have you had any smaller power cuts prior to this big one?
