Please Help!
My partner has tried to start his computer up, however, the computer doesn't bring the desktop up. He says its a blank screen. He's tried to restart it but to no avail.
He says that last night a blue screen came up, but he ignored it and switched his computer off. He's switched it on today and hasn't been able to get to the desktop. Windows is setting up but when the desktop is ready to come up, it doesn't and its just a blank screen. He's tried it in safe mode but again nothing.
He's on Windows 2000.
He is worried that he's lost all his stuff (he's a musician and has all his music on the hard drive).

does he have the original disks for the machine, there should be a repair function if you start up the PC from the disk
there is a way of getting the info off the hard disk with a bootable linux disk that will enable you to burn the music off the had disk unless it has failed, which does not seem the case as Windows boots up
can you get into the safe mode menu by hitting F8 at all ??
try the Last Known Good Configuration option, This starts Windows using a previous good configurationEx forum ambassador

Sounds like the installation of Windows may be corrupted, especially if he ignored a blue screen and simply switched the computer off.
Has he got any disks with the computer as they may have a repair tool?0 -

If you have important music on the disk, dont panic, and do anything drastic like wipe it and re-install Win2K, or you may lose it all.. a repair/linux boot is fine, but don't re-install.
If it eventually comes to a re-install, then you could buy a new hard disk for £20, install the o/s on that, attach the original disk as a slave, and recover the data from there.
The likelihood is that the music will still be there.. the forum members will probably be able to walk you through getting it back.. without resorting to a re-installEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
