Norton AV - Problems Sending/Receiving E-Mail

  • Hi all,

I am also having major problems collecting my pop 3 e mails and I use Norton as a provider for my firewall and anti virus software.

It looks as thought it certainly IS a Norton problem because in order to collect my e mails I had to turn off my Norton anti virus software and I also had to turn off my Norton internet security (firewall).

I turned them all back on as soon as my e mails had been retreived.

The only problem now, is that my pop 3 email account will not be automatically checked every minute as it normally is, and I will have to turn off my Norton internet security and anti virus software, everytime i want to send or receive my e mails.

Defeats the object of having internet security, doesn't it? What a real pain!!

    I hope that this helps.

(EDIT 10.53am, I have just found out that I DO NOT have to turn off my norton anti virus software to collect my e mails, but I DO have to turn off my norton firewall.)

  • leo, try just Turning off email scanning in Norton AV, for both incoming and outgoing mail.

Email scanning is a total waste of time and system resources because, as the technical information in that link says, you are still protected if the normal Norton Auto-Protect is enabled.
  • Leo, it sounds as though the problem you are having is very similar to mine.

Just to put one or two things clear, I have managed to download e-mail after disabling the Norton Internet Security, as I managed to get e-mail from PlusNet to try to resolve the problem.

I may be wrong here, but I really do not think that it is a case of having an e-mail with or without an attachment which is somehow stuck and not downloading. Also, the test e-mail I tried to send just got stuck in the outbox and would not budge. This has happened more than once since Boxing Day.

My Norton Internet Security also has a built in firewall, but when left clicking the Norton icon at the bottom right of the screen I can then click "disable Norton Internet Security". A box comes up that asks how long I wish to disable it for, but I have made sure that I have manually enabled it again.

I agree that it is a pain - my system checks for e-mails every five minutes and it now has to be manually disabled and then enabled again.

Like Browntoa, I do wonder if this will be resolved soon by Norton.

    Hi all,

    Chippy_Minton,

Thanks for your input. I have just done as you suggested and it doesn't have any effect.

    Loobeylou,

I have also tried the test e mail thing but to no avail.

It doesn't really matter if the e mail has an attachment or not, it still won't leave my outbox and I still can't send or receive e mails unless I turn off my Norton Internet Security.

I also have the option of choosing how long the firewall is switched off and, like you, I select 5 minutes.

    Browntoa,

Thanks for your reply, if this problem is starting to appear all over the web then it will certainly be just a matter of time before Norton devise a solution.

    Shall I hold my breath?

I had slightly similar problems with Outlook 2003 & Norton Internet Security 2005.

Not quite the same problem as yours as I would get to around 60% or 70% and then it would hang....and eventually a ccapp.exe error would occur requiring a reboot (which is a Norton process)

Tried everything and still could'nt cure completely. However the following helped a bit, especially the second :

Disable outgoing mail scanning (NIS setting)

Make sure you only retrieve incoming mail one account at a time (this is obviously only if you have more than one e-mail account setup with your mail programme). Check your programme to find out how to do this)

    Hope this helps !

Thanks for your input JonG, but I think I am going to hang fire for a few days to see if this sorts out in the meantime by downloading more updates from Norton. I did try to find a Contact Us link so that I could e-mail Norton, but had no success.

To some degree I find it reasurring that this problem has been seen in other places on the Web, as it seems that it is not just my problem.

Leo - I found that I had to cancel the test e-mail in my outbox as it just would not budge. I also found that the percentage counter would go up to around 80% and then give up the ghost and go back down to starting again. I am no expert by any means, but I think that the suggestion that this problem has come about due to a download from Norton seems feasible.

    Hi all,

    Hi Loobeylou,

The test email that I sent to myself was held in my outbox until I turned off my Norton Internet Security.
As soon as I turned off the security the email sent straight away, and appeared in my inbox within the blink of an eye.

My advice would be to sit this one out until Norton get their act together. That is what I am doing.

We don't have a choice really.

Thanks for this folks. Had a worrying day trying to sort out my email and thinking I probably had an invasion of some sort despite up to date (Norton) protection. Having read the thread, I turned off my email virus checker and personal firewall and received my emails. You've assured me now that it's the last update wot dun it! I'll await the fix impatiently. Thanks for your assistance
