Norton AV - Problems Sending/Receiving E-Mail

Regularly update my Norton AV on "live update" and over the past few days I have had problems sending and receiving e-mail. Thought at first it was something to do with my PlusNet account, but they are stating that they have had several people complain about the same thing - the e-mail "send/receive" seems to hang and will not do as it is meant to do.

They suggested I disable my Norton AV temporarily and see if the send/receive worked. This did work for the incoming mail, but the test e-mail I did to another of my e-mail addresses has remained in the outbox.

They are now suggesting I uninstall Norton AV and reinstall it again, and state that even if I then do a live update, it should not cause the same problem again.

Any of you techie people out there have any view on this please?

Norton AntiVirus versions 7.0 and above contain a program called Poproxy. This program intercepts incoming email before the message is received by the user's email client.

When Poproxy fails to run properly, perhaps because of a conflict with another system process, users get an error message, saying, "The connection to the server has failed." When AntiVirus is installed the e-mail client preferences are changed to connect to Poproxy instead of the service offered by the ISP. Symantec acknowledges the problem, but doesn't regard it as a flaw in its product. I disagree. Software that doesn't work well in many instances is flawed.

possibly changing the POP3 settings in your email account back to the default ones for you ISP will cure the problem at least for now, Nortons will still offer protection against viruses anyway

I would recommend changing from Nortons at some point in the future, I'm always coming across this same problem !!

  • Am running Norton Symantic 2005, which was put on when I purchased the machine about two to three months ago. It has worked perfectly up until this last few days, but I do tend to download the updates on a very regular basis, and it is possible that one of these has caused this problem. I get no error message coming up on screen. It just takes ages to run through to nearly 100% and then starts all over again.

Edit: So Is it refusing to come on or just updates wont work and
I know its a new PC but is Norton still in date..
  • Have no problems "live" updating Norton AV, but I now find that my e-mail seems to be unable to go through the process of sending and receiving - I have a little percentage counter and it usually whizzes through from 1% to 100% and the e-mails come in and go out. However, this percentage counter is now hanging horribly and does not actually get up to 100% before it gives up and then tries again. Nothing comes in and nothing goes out.

Regarding the Norton being out of date or not, this was installed as a new purchase on my new computer around October this year.
