Putting Orange Contract SIM in an Orange PAYG phone: will it work?

Options
Hi guys

Wondering if anyone can help me with this question: If I buy the Orange SPV C550 from the orange website Pay As You Go, and then take out one of the 12month free contract's on Orange that are available, will it work if I put the contract Orange SIM card in to the PAYG SPV C550?

Thanks guys

    yes it will
  • Thanks for that. Can you tell me what makes you so sure? Guess I'm a bit nervous about splashing out all that cash up front and to find my attempted money saving scam doesn't work!

(I've worked out that doing this I can have the CV550 on OVP 200 contract using the above trick for about £8.33 a month - the cheapest CV550 on contract elsewhere on the same tariff is more like £13.00)

    Thanks all :j

NO it will not. Orange handsets are locked but Orange PAYG handsets are not only locked to the Orange networks but they are GID1 locked as well. This second lock means that the the handset will only works with an Orange PAYG SIM.

It will work the other way, PAYG SIM into a contract handset but to do what you want the handset would need unlocking. I believe that Orange will charge you £20 for the code or you could probably get it done cheaper somewhere else.

  • Thanks again all. Almost went ahead and bought the PAYG phone then!

re. These G1D1 unlock codes: the website provided by gizmoleeds (http://www.m-99.co.uk/Mobile_Phone_...work_codes.html) looks a bit unclear to me; it says 'Below is a complete list of MCC + MNC network codes for UK and worldwide networks. For use with code calculator software.'

Is an MCC or MNC code the same as G1D1? And what does it mean by 'For use with code calculator software'? Is doing all this something I'll be able to do myself at home quite easily?

Also, can anyone vouch that it is possible to unlock the SPV C550 off the G1D1 network?

    Thanks one and all!

  • Suppose so: Espresso, could you give me some more information?

Or can anyone else say whether an Orange contract SIM card will work in an Orange PAYG SPV C550 phone?

    Thanks all :p

Basically operators lock their handsets by using various options.

An Orange contract handset is just locked using the Provider lock.

An Orange PAYG handset is locked by using the Provider lock and the Network lock (GID1)

This is to try to prevent people buying PAYG handsets and using them as cheap contract upgrades. i.e. the user does not have to commit to another 12 months contract.

I'm sure that you could get this SPV handset unlocked somewhere but I have no knowledge of unlocking them. Orange will provide unlock code for £20.

Question for you - why did you thank the one person who gave you totally incorrect information?

  • Good point - you all deserve much thanks! I think I'll try and contact Orange and ask them. Anyone know much about the Orange SPV550? Know how to unlock it so it will take a orange contract sim? :xmassmile

You need to make contact with Browtoa or Drachir. They're both very savvy about unlocking handsets.
  • I would say that a pay&go handset WILL work with a contract sim, and vice versa.
If you buy pay&go, they give you an option at any time to turn it into a contract, and I've never had to send my phone off.

I believed the GID1 thing to have been used on old Nokia's.

I await a final decision, quite an interesting topic!

The last couple of Orange PAYG handsets (Nokia & SE) I have had through my hands have not been GID1 locked to Orange as they have readily accepted contract Orange SIM's. I think some of the earlier Orange handsets were though.

Vodafone also used to GID1 lock their PAYT handsets. Not sure if they still do though.
