  • Option 2 is the one you want.

Make sure both computers are in the same workgroup: right-click My Computer - Properties - Computer Name tab - Change button. Workgroup name should be the same on both machines. The workgroup name should appear under Microsoft Windows Network when you browse for the printer. Expand the workgroup name and the printer name should be listed.

It sounds like wackojackouk's Work Laptop is on a domain because there was an option to find a printer in the directory (meaning Active Directory), so this may not be possible.
Anyway I selected network printer and got three options

    1. Find a printer in the directory

    could you elaborate?

can you ping PC1 from PC2 and vice versa?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

You'll need to find out pc2's IP Address to ping it from PC one.

On PC two, open a command prompt, type ipconfig then note down the Wireless Adapter's IP Address. Go to PC1, open a command prompt, type "ping " then the IP Address of PC2 (without the quotes). You should get 4 replies.

OK thanks, the laptop must be a member of the work domain, so no need to put it in the same workgroup as the desktop computer as I said previously.

Option 2 is still the one - try typing in \\computername\printername, where computername is the name of desktop PC and printername is share name of the printer. Also make sure that the Server service is running on the desktop m/c (Start - Run - type in services.msc and click OK).
  • It's working now - thanks guys much appreciated

Also make sure you have disabled any firewalls otherwise it could cause problems later. :)
