I make easy yo mainly because of the ease of reproducing the lactic cultures. I have just picked up a packet and it contains L bulgaricus, S thermophilus, Lacidophilus and bifidobacteria. It also contains oligosaccharides which are very beneficial in sustaining good bacteria in the gut. Bifidus is a particularly important probiotic
My reason for making and eating yoghurt is not just as a desert/pudding/snack but as part of an eating- for -health way of life. Hence my use of easy yo and the bio mixes0 -

I have the Easiyo but do not use the packets, as I too thought they worked out expensive. Instead I put a couple of tablespoons of live organic yogurt in, as the starter, 1/2 cup of organic skim milk powder and then top up with either organic skim or whole milk. Whisk it all together and then pop into the easiyo as normal. I then have organic yogurt at the fraction of the price than if I had bought it. Of course you can use normal milk and skim milk powder.

Like many others, i also have the Lakeland yogurt maker (£19.99 i think). I started out by making it with a flask but had mixed results so i splashed out on the Lakeland yogurt maker and i haven't looked back. We eats loads of yogurt and i think it does work out cheaper. Also i have to use goats milk & goats yogurt for my kids. Goats yogurt, if you can buy it, is very expensive so making yogurt at home has worked out a lot cheaper. Do a search for making your own yogurt and loads of MSE threads will come up. This is where i got all my yogurt making info from. I do buy the easiyo squeezy jam but that's to pacify the kids. I'm making cheaper yogurt so i buy the squeezy jam.0

For me, greek yoghurt, UHT wholemilk and 2 tbs dried milk make the loveliest yoghurt, but probably the most fattening!!! I discovered this really nice icecream sauce ( a luxury one, not those synthetic ones) and as I generally choose strawberry or raspberry yoghurt, they worked very well to flavour it.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

But as I use the last yoghurt of each batch to start the next I can go months before buying another. Depends if Heron's are doing probiotics cheaper than I can make them or not and if I've been away for a while and my starter isn't fresh and I'm not sensible enough to keep some spare starter in the freezer like some sensible folks do. But even if you have to fork out 37p for a fresh probiotic natural non set yoghurt it's no big deal if you can keep that starter alive in different batches of yoghurt for another 3 months or more.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

You can also make cream cheese in a similar method to making yogurt. I use my yogurt maker. To make cream chese i use 2 tbsps of buttermilk (34p from asda) and 500ml of double cream. In the yogurt maker for 8 hours, strain and bobs your auntie :snow_grin I found this in the hugh fernley-whitingstall new book.0

Tried goat's milk yogurt last night. I used UHT goat's milk, but ordinary yogurt as a starter. Other than that I made it exactly the same as normal. But it is quite runny. What did I do wrong? I suspect it was using ordinary yogurt (not goat's) as a starter. Anybody know if this could be what happened?0
