Write to Tesco head office with a complaint, they are in the wrong. Local manager is just defending his staff's actions.
Take it higher than a customer advisor with the card issuer.
Would help if you were to name the card involved.ac's lovechild0 -
Was a Goldfish card provided by Lloyds TSB Bank.0

I’ve had to cut up customers cards in the past, usually you get told to call authorisation by the terminal, you ring the number, if there is a problem with the card you get put through to a different department where you take down the address of where to send the card to, you then have to cut the card over the magnetic strip in-front of the customer and inform them that you are performing this act under the request of the credit agency and returning the card to them.
You may think this as a lot of effort and hassle for a company and the member of staff, but every time I have done it, the credit company has sent the company a thankyou cheque for £100+ and myself a cheque for £50+ (depending on the type of card VISA/MasterCard/AMEX)
So to be honest when a lot of people/companies call up the authorisation they want the card to be cut up, as there likely to benefit from a nice thankyou cheque.0 -
I am amazed at tis.Surely someone has to be accountable for what has to be a mistake. I think you should push for some form of compensation.I hope you had another way of paying for your shopping. It could have been really difficult if you didn't.0

I just cannot believe the member of staff will receive money for this action. This just cannot be right. No wonder she had a smile on her face while cutting it up. I don't think its much effort or hassle for a member of staff on £7 an hour to gain £50 for a few minutes work!.
I am certainly finding out more information than i expected. No wonder they phone a third party agency and not the providing issuer if they are to gain an incentive.0 -
Ashleyfae, they were quite happy for me to pay using another card with the same name on it. I will be very causious handing my new replacement card to them, asking for it back if there is a problem with it.0

I have also been asked several times to cut up a card. In my opinion I would be more prepared for them to cut it up thatn keep it whole, in fact, I'm pretty sure they are not aloud to keep it whole. Not sure why it happened in this instance, but usually to do with fraud (Not saying thats what your up to because clearly you are not! -lol)0

There has to be an incentive for the staff to cut up your card in front of you as they are in the firing zone of your wrath.
£50 seems about right but £100 to the store as well!!
Seems to me you have a starting point of £150 to claim off Goldfish - go for double!
Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.0 -
My boyfriend worked in a shop and on an occasion when he phoned for authorisation of a card was told by the person at the end of the phone to cut up the card, told the customer who went mad and demanded to talk to the person on the phone. After speaking to the person on the phone for 5 minutes was told they had made a mistake and there was nothing wrong with the card and it was authorised! Luckily he didnt cut up the card or the customer may have been even more mad at him.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Perhaps in the long run you have been done a favour, for all you might know the card could have been "cloned" which does happen quite frequently. At least it might stop the fradulent use of your card and all that it entails. I imagine you must of been mightly embarassed, I know I would be but if the credit card company tells somebody to cut the card up I imagine they have to do it (under terms and conditions of retailers accepting the card?). I am disappointed though to see immediately people are talking about gaining compensation, perhaps a full answer might be better from your card issuer? Have you contacted the card issuer to ask for an explaination? No Matter what you do there will be critics.0
