  • I am on the way out but some news for you: in the usa the yield on gilts has turned negative ie people are paying to buy government bonds. Gold is going into backwardisation ie no-one will be selling gold as the price is cheaper going into the futures. I am buying more tinned foods for my storecupboard!!!

On a much brighter theme: green shoots are appearing in the stock market and this is an advance indicator. I can see the wood through the trees

D and DD I feel the good mood from you, it is nice not having whirring, buzzing things on, that need electricity. All it will take now is a peaceful blanket of snow and silence will descend. Well done on being so organised. We should all have a grope in the dark now and then
for the wind up lanterns of course lol :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: I know what you were thinking

Do you know, I really like it when something like that happens (on a non-critical day) as I don't feel the need to achieve, anything achieved that day is a bonus! Eg, when kids were off sick, I didn't have to go out!

I'm a happier bunny today, don't have to go into work till next Monday (Work isn't good at the mo), have a chance to catch up all the things I've been leaving because I couldn't be bothered. A quick foray to the post office later and a manicure client coming at lunchtime (she's a friend, so that's good). Today will be much better for my mental health.

TOmorrow may not be quite as good, dh is on the first trip (only 2 days this time) of his new project, so marks a change in our lives. It will be up to 3 months at a time for the next 2 years. I'm very mindful of the fact that he is fortunate in that he is in work. He was a contractor till May, then took a paycut and became staff. It seems in the current economic climate that it was a good move, as contractors are being laid off.

  • Hi

We had a power cut too yesterday (only an hour from 6.30 to 7.30). I was so relieved I'd followed all your advice - had my wind up torch ready and soon got the candles lit. It did feel like a trial run and I felt happy that my family now understand what I've been doing preparing for winter and emergency scenarios!

I keep doing this as well - every time there is bad news I run to the store to get more food and supplies! :o I'm not really sure what I'm preparing for - I think I have enough not to have to leave the house for 3 months :rotfl: It will be useful if DH or I lose our jobs. DH is pretty safe though, they just made his boss redundant so he's now in charge of his area. He won't lose his job unless the whole place goes down now.

Well I will be doing some organising of cupboards and storage all over the house today! I had a delivery of pet food and cat litter this morning and an order coming from approved foods later this week as well. I have completely run out of space and am going to have to start storing tins under the bed and don't get me started on toilet paper!

On that note, Andrex is on sale at Mr. T - costs less than their own brand at the moment! ;)

:D LOL my DH thought I'd lost the plot when I started buying all the reduced lanterns in Woolies a couple of years ago  I've got a fabby headtorch too for cooking so I can go 'handsfree' :rotfl: :o
They are useful for normal times too,he takes my headtorch and large lantern fishing with him and sometimes when DS3 just wants to lay in a darkened room to chill out he likes the light from them as its not so harsh as the spotlights.
A couple of the lanterns have a mobile phone charger and radio on them and one has emergency beacon, insect reppeller, siren and radio :rotfl: I feel like Rambo

I'm now thinking of 'accidentally' flicking the main circuit breaker maybe once every 6 months or so just to run a drill...usually don't need to though as although we are in Greater London/Surrey we get a power cut every 6 weeks or so!
Kitty I'll have a look round some of my bookmarks tonight for a bit more info..last time I had a chance to look things were looking quite grim for a lot of people in the states sadly.. I'll post any findings;)

I think I'll also be laying in a few more meat products (when they're on offer of course) just in case the Irish scare sends the prices rocketing.
I'm so glad I have the stores now as I won't have to buy tomatoes, sauce, beans, oil, sugar etc for the forseeable so hopefully by the time I need anything the prices will slide or there will be some offers on

I read all your stories with such awe and admiration, you are all so organised!

Apart from a bit of stored food (that's just because I buy in bulk as it is cheaper) I really do not have anything stored. Got loads of candles but just realised not a lot of matches (fat lot of good that does!).

Sufficient wood for the stove if the heating packed up but it would easily get burned in a few days if we did not manage it carefully.

One wind-up torch, goodness knows where it is!

I think I need to have a good talk with DH and make a list of essentials to stock up with!

Thank you for the wake-up call on this one!

My stocks have been seriously used up in the last few weeks -- partly due to elder son (Mr Hollow Legs) being home from the Army, but also due to the total stop on all income with losing my DH and being made redundant within a space of 2 weeks!!

But things are looking up now, as my redundancy lump sum arrived in the bank this morning, the outstanding IB from DH's claim came in the post (still waiting on DLA), and the forms from the Occupational Pension scheme also came today which imply they'll try to make the first payment (which may include the lump sum) by the end of the month if I get them back ASAP.

So I'm going to do a stock-take tomorrow/Friday, and then go and do a major shop to refill all the spaces :) I don't tend to go out intentionally for much in the way of meat though (other than frozen mince, sausages and breaded fish pieces), as I fill the freezers with Whoopsies so we can have nicer cuts without spending any more than I would on value/smartprice.

My order arrived from approved foods today. What fun (I think I need to get out more!) Was manicuring a client at the time (she's also a friend) and unpacked it while her nails dried. She was quite amazed. She said the washup liq that I got for 50p was usually £1.20. So pleased with the decaff coffee at a reasonable price as well. Need to plan a kidney bean meal or two to use them up. Ideas on a post card pleased....refritos first.
