Does anybody else remember sets of three triangular pots that fitting together onto one cooker ring ? So you could 3 diffrent things on one heat ? I wonder if you still get them?
I don't remember the three pots, but my mum had a two pot set that fitted together on the one cooker ring. must check if it is still around. Perhaps it is an idea for a manufacturer to market these again.0 -
Think Lakeland do a 'three pan on one ring 'set but is quite expensive.Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task. William James0

Hi Yes, the alluminium ones my mum had were Tower or Prestige. There was a set on Ebay recently. We had a smaller set for a camping stove years ago when the kids were little. Years ago I used my nans old 3 tier steamer, [as her pans were in good condition I saw no reason to buy new] until we took the kids to the Science Museum where youngest DS shouted at the top of his voice LOOK MUM there are your pans [they were in a 1920's kitchen], I thought this was brilliantbut Grumpy Grandad got all embarrased, and bought me a set of heavy stainless steel pans for Christmas that year [didnt know whether to thank him or brain him with them] and put my nans pans in the garage to be used as oil/paint cans. Although in all fairness must say that 25 years on the pans are still in great nick.

I tried to work with fingerless gloves on but found it really hard to type with them on, has anyone experienced this? I wonder if very thin gloves would work! ...
Caterina, I'll pass on a tip I got from my music teacher just a few years ago (ok, in the 1950's). I had a hot water bottle on my lap when I was practising piano at home. Mum used to wrap it in a towel so it didn't burn my knees; our back room was so cold I sometimes used to wear my coat too. you could use a wheat or rice bag?
... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Sadly none of her books are still in print, but there are old ones on Amazon. She also has a website which is worth a browse:

I agree it is really funny seeing people publish books full of all these "new" ways of saving money that we have all been doing for years!0 -
Mummysaver - I think I solved the problem of over-use of the cooker (which I am loathe to use at any time) I put the 3 varieties of pulses in my 3-tier steamer and cooked for 30 mins then left to cool til this morning. It worked, I have steamer full of soft pulses
. Now I just have to find room in the already-full freezer for them all . Would still be interested to know if it's cost effective but looking at the amount of pulses in my kitchen I am sure it is, there's enough to feed an army there!
I hope that you didn't cook red kidney beans this way. They *have* to be boiled vigorously for at least 10 minutes because they contain toxins that can only be destroyed by this 10 minute boiling. AFAIK, red kidney beans are the only ones you have to worry about - all the other pulses/beans are ok.
Also, if you do need beans in a hurry and haven't soaked them overnight you can do a hot soak instead of an overnight cold soak. Put the beans in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to the boil and boil vigorously for 2 to 3 minutes then turn the heat off and leave them in the hot water for around an hour. Then cook as normal.

just a quickie, doh my whole long post got lost yesterday so fingers crossed for today except it`ll be a shortie.
My storecupboard is going to be very very useful just now as my dd is coping in a new house, new, very resposnsible medical job, toddler, big dogs, dh who has to live far away for a few more weeks in army accomodation so 2 homes to support for a few more weeks and no time, not even 10 minutes to do anything let alone shop. We are driving there later and I am taking a stash from my storecupboard as well as 2 hm ready cooked meals and a new sack of potatoes. She hasn`t been eating properly as there is literally no time or inclination to cook
I am going to make a list now and will start to empty some shelves. That is what it is all about0 -
