I'm just re-reading Tightwad Gazette for the third time, and each time I find new things in it. Its one of the best books I ever spent money on (I bought it second hand, Amy would be pleased to know! :))

I've got haricot beans soaking at the mo, for my homemade baked beans, think they work out cheaper than the shops, but having just started making them again we've all remembered how much nicer they taste. I freeze these in can sized portions in old marg tubs.

Ah...but Mardatha - there's at least one type of lichen thats edible....not very M.S.E. to turn down the idea of free food;) :D - but apparently the edible ones taste like powdered aspirin and count as "survival food" (i.e. one eats it only if theres nowt else available).

I thought she meant she'd be off to collect them.

Talking of sell-by dates - DS5 suddenly decided to make bread this afternoon. Since he hadn't warned me before my giant shop yesterday the only yeast I had in the house said "Best Before 2001"
He's now wondering whether it will work. (I'm wondering whether ANY yeast will work in this igloo - I never thought I'd say it but I miss my Rayburn :( )
