  • Sometimes people become brash about how well off they are because they are overcompensating for something that makes them feel really down and depressed about themselves. Not knowing the individual referred to in the original post, I have no idea if this actually is the case, but it is possible that he has not truly come to terms with the loss of his leg. Even the risktaking may be a corrupted way of trying to either stick two fingers up at whatever led to his loss or because he feels like self harming. I can't say for sure, it's possible that he couldn't either, but he may actually be very sad and lost inside.

But, on the other hand, disabled people can be d---heads just as easily as anyone else. Ask my OH and he'll agree that I can be thoroughly dislikeable at times!
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Yup you are officially Rock n Roll :D
  • Glad you said that. I had been thinking this one over too. When you do feel bad or are in pain not everyone wants to know! People soon avoid you so I do wonder if a bit of bravado has been going on??
  • what is wrong with the boards these days? Another one asking if she should 'shop' her next door neighbour somewhere?? What a small minded petty attitude some folks have these days.....don't see/hear the most god awful abuse when it happens under their noses - but ye gods if somebody gets a motability car....

Indeed! I have had four cars on the scheme so far. It's brilliant, I get to drive stuff I could never dream of having otherwise. Sadly, somebody nearby has taken it upon themselves to report me for benefit fraud, twice, on changing cars, notably when I got my VW and my Honda being somewhat more expensive than a run o' the mill car. They didn't bother to report me when I got the basic Fiat Punto :D .

It gets me when they talk about being given a government motability car, they obviously don't realise that we pay a big chunk of our benefits out for one, and in some cases it can cost more doing it that way.

Then again, I've heard disabled people talk about getting a brand new car for 'only' £99, they don't seem to realise that they're paying about £3.5k on top of that either!
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

I'm afraid I make a point of correcting people on that one, and point out that I also go without other things in order to be able to afford it. And then I tell them that I'd still rather not have the money and be pain free and have the normal amounts of energy for someone my age.

I don't think it computes with some people that we actually pay rather a high price for this 'perk'.

that is exactly it to get mobility you must be able to practically not walk at all but ive also seen these people lift up there sticks and run and when they are coming up for a new car after 3 years there they are struggling around on there sticks then they get the new car and they are walking normally . i think the system should change this self assesment rule thing is not right as some are better story tellers than others and its all down to wording apparantly this would show whos genuine and who is not .

my brother has just qualified for the higher rate mobility and DWP wrote to his two consultants and his doctor to get reports on his health before offering him the award. From his experience it looks to me like it would be extremely difficult to get away with anything - how come some people are managing this?
  • I work full time and get lower rate DLA, I can understand what people are saying some people know how to work the system and when people claiming benefits for disability people automaticly assume if they dont look disabled they are playing the system, I know this beacuse I did this myself, I learned the hard way got arthritis had both my knees replaced my hip and both elbows last one last month by the age 27 and still have bad arthritis in my wrists I dont look disabled I now look at things differently.

I have dla at high rate and i'm a full-time uni student, and have a motability car with it, which is my only way of getting out of the house.

People think that as i have arms and legs that work, and have not got a lack of sight or hearing, I cannot be classed as disabled.

Only close family know that my car is from motability, because i fear if everyone finds out, they will be a bit jealous, i think!
I now this, as an elderly neightbour recently got a motability car, and he was verbally abused, by brainless youths claiming:
"Its not fair, why should you get a brand new car, when we have paid for it with our taxes over the years, and you're gonna be dead in a few years!!"

Sad thing was, I don't think they had even done a days work between them.
Anyway, I phoned the police, and they no longer bothered the neighbour. touchwood.

Anyway, if they deprive an elderly person of a luxury, like a car, even though he has paid taxes all his life, and fought in wars for everyone, i fear people will look down on me too, by thinking a 19 year old girl has a new shiny car, and we are older than her and have a used car.

I would gladly live with a used car, if it meant i did not have all the pains in my joints, and all the operations!
I'd like to see them have a day in my shoes, and see how happy they feel!!!
  • I get the lower rate of care DLA as well as Industrial Injuries Benefit. I have a Blue Badge for my car. When I parked in one of the three disabled bays at work I was pulled up for it!

I was told "You do not look disabled" and "You work to hard to be disabled"

Do not read a book by its cover!

There are people out there that get things they should not, the forms are so long if you are sick you can sometimes not even start to fill them out.
  • I agree with you about the forms, I have to get myself in the right frame of mind before I even start with them!!!
