having never been in a situation where i could say with 100% certainity that i knew someone was claiming falsely i never have, im not really sure i could either.

i felt bad enough when i reported aneighbout to the rspca, and i only did that because i couldnt stnad by and watch her pets be neglected and no ammount of intervention/suggestions from me made any difference. but that involved another living beings welfare.

a friend of mince got reported for benefit fraud by her neighbour, purely out of spite because they ahd an argument...she was a genuine claimant and a visit and few questions cleared it up, but was horrible for her in the time it took to sort.

i really do think that the government and medias focus on fraudsters is wrong, very, very wrong.

I would have no qualms about reporting anyone who was cruel to animals.
  • i thin its partly the governments/news/media fault for constantly going on about people claiming when they are fine and have been caught out playing golf everyday or such like. no one hears about the peopel who need the benefits and dont claim because theya re scared to, or dont feel they should, or claim and get turned down. really makes me mad.

I agree, the sick and disabled are the new "underclass", the government has deliberately set out to demonize us, probably to take attention away from the rising amount of people on JSA, and I would think there are many more "benefit fraudsters" amongst them. I know several people on JSA, all capable of work but don't want to (yes, they have told me this)at least two have been on JSA for two years or more.

The government focus on us because the sick and disabled are too sick to fight back!

  • This board has really brought the worms out of the wood work hasn't it?

I work full time and I get DLA and if I was allowed to drive I would get free car tax.

If some people saw me they may question how legit it was because I have an unseen disability and unless you were close to me you would not know just how much it effects my life, my work, my choice of where I live, what type of job I do, the activities I can participate in, at times even if I can walk around my own home in safety or use the bathroom.

Please don't make judgements on what you can or can not see or what the neighbours may gossip about based on assumption rather than fact.

I would hate to be classed as a worm.
  • Oh, stereotypes!

I'm disabled, and until July worked full-time; and my reason for ceasing to work there was related to my employer's being inconsiderate and flouting the law, so I wrote the appropriate letter and walked out. It was not caused by my disability (although such has worsened since).

As for s-e-x - well you're disabled, how dare you want that?! Needless to say (especially as a wheelchair user, I think that heightens this assumption) that 95% of the public believe you're physically incapable of that, doing your own shopping, driving, or indeed anything else, unassisted...

Back on subject, I receive LRM and MRC DLA, although I expect the mobility rate to be increased to the higher rate soon. I repeat, I worked full-time, but I have no issues with having claimed DLA for this period; half of what I would be expected to do ordinarily in my employment I couldn't without being so intensively supervised it'd be pointless me being there. So, it wasn't without good cause, oh and I didn't climb ladders! :-D

one thing i have noticed is whenever an op wants to bash those on dla they always seem to point out how the person can be fine one minute and then claim the next.
well with some chronic conditions such as ms the symptoms can affect a person for months/ years then they can relapse but it doesnt mean the condition isnt there.

Having a false leg is always there thought and whilst you may think that because this person can climb ladders etc they are not disabled how would you think you would cope with one of your legs missing??

hate to say this but....If the government decides this is what you get if you have a false leg....thats what you are entitled to.....

if you dont like whats available, or are in some way "jealous" of benefits available you should really ask yourself which would I prefer....genuine benefits I'm entitled to ...or....the loss of a leg.......

I know which I would choose.
    I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

I had to give up a very well paid job because I am ill. I am not envious of anyone getting incapacity benefit or DLA.

My OH works full time and gets DLA - DLA know exactly how many hours he works and how much he earns and he gets lower rate DLA for a mental health problem... so yes, its possible.

How does DLA help in improving your OH quality of life or condition?

I can't answer for the lady who posted, but my son receives DLA for Autistic Spectrum Disorder. He receives lower mobility rate, this helps with transport, he finds public transport very difficult due to close proximity of people etc, so it could pay for an alternative means of transport, to reduce levels of anxiety. It could be used to pay for someone to accompany him to an activity or club to assist in communication or something else, (no he isn't mute before you ask but when he is under stress he has not always been able to vocalise a problem) and with someone with him they can recognise signs that he is becoming aggravated and help him use a suitable strategy for coping.. Hidden disabilities are difficult because if they are managed well the person diagnosed, can seem no different to anyone else, thus giving the impression they don't need extra assistance.

Hope this helps you understand the type of help it can be used for that makes a difference to quality of life.
My finances are work in progress.
    Normal veiwing will resume shortly
