    Hi again

Have you tried startpage guard as was suggested?

Even if you have I see you are concerned about what else may be going on possibly behind the scenes.

    Go here.....

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

....and download the HijackThis ("HJT") program. It's perfectly safe and is very small.

Open the program and you will see a menu of options. Choose the first one "Do a system scan and save a log file". Two things will happen....it will carry out the scan then give you a logfile report in Notepad. Post the contents of that logfile report to this thread and I will have a look at it for you. HJT is very good at highlighting browser hijackers, viruses, trojan downloaders and other malware.

If HJT identifies anything bad I'll let you know how to get rid of it.

OK. That log is fairly clean. Few things.

    1. You have the HJT folder in a temporary location. Please move the HJT folder to your C: hard drive so it is in a permament place. This will ensure any backups made by HJT are not lost.

    2. You have these two entries in your trusted zone....

    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://register-tesco.qa.business.ntl.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://memberservices.tesco.net

Now...that's your choice but I would NEVER allow anything into that zone no matter how much you trust it. Putting something there is like opening the front door to your home, giving them free access and saying "Come on in. Do what you want to my property." Dangerous.

    3. I see you are running Norton for your antivirus. There are also references to Avast4 antivirus as well. Are they both running on your system? If so you must remove one of them. To have two or more AVs operation will cause conflicts.

You say that this log was from your "user" account. Separate "user" accounts on one PC is - in effect - creating indiividual computers. You will need to run HJT on each user account where there are problems.

So I suggest you repeat the scan when logged on as your husband as that is where the real problem is.

When you reply you might also like to give me your thoughts on my comments above on your own user account.

Hi, here it is logged in as my hubby.

With regards to your other points, you mention that HJT folder is in temp location, how do I put it onto my hard drive?

How do I remove the 2 entries from my trusted sites?

I will remover one of the AV but which one, Norton or Avast?

Sorry I did warn you I was a novice but I thank you for your help so far!

    HI

OK. We'll go through this one point at a time.

I suggest you print this out to help you follow everything.

First you should expose hidden files & folders. Do this: Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

    Now on to your points.

Moving the HJT folder > go to the place where the folder is at the moment. The location is in the HJT report. For instance, in this latest log you do this...

Go to the D drive, Documents and Settings, anthony, Local Settings, Temporary Internet Files, Content.IE5, Q5U9G36B. You should find the HJT folder there. Just left click on it, HOLD the mouse button and drag the folder over to the main D drive and drop it by letting go the left mouse button.

The folder should now be in a safe place on the D drive.

removing entries > Reboot your system in Safe Mode (by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open HijackThis and click on "Scan".

When the result appears you will see all HJT entries listed with small "tick boxes" to the left of each one.

Find those two 015 "trusted" entries and left click once in the tick box to the left of each of those entries ONLY. What you are doing is telling HJT these are the entries you want to remove. BE CAREFUL to tick only those two. Nothing else.

Now go to the bottom of the HJT scan screen and you will see "Fix Checked". Click on that instruction but please remember to close all other windows, including browsers, before clicking “Fix checked”..

Those two entries should now be gone. I say "should" because 015 entries can stick like glue. We'll find out what happened when you do another HJT scan later on.

which AV to remove? > ultimately the choice is yours but remember you have Norton Internet Security. That isn't just AV....it's got a firewall too. So, for the moment, my choice would be disable Avast (don't remove it completely) and make sure you have all the latest Norton updates installed.

Now to the issues with your husband's log.

First, again, the HJT folder is in a temporary place. Find the folder and move it to a hard drive.

Second, this entry is bad and must be fixed with HJT.....

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

Follow the same routine as above, namely...

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open HijackThis and click on "Scan".

When the result appears you will see all HJT entries listed with small "tick boxes" to the left of each one.

Find that bad R0 entry and left click once in the tick box to the left of it. Again, what you are doing is telling HJT you want it removed. BE CAREFUL to tick only that one. There may be several similar looking entries so watch out.

Now go to the bottom of the HJT scan screen and you will see "Fix Checked". Click on that instruction but, again, please remember to close all other windows, including browsers, before clicking “Fix checked”..

Lastly, I suggest you do two more HJT scans....one in your user account and one in your husband's. Post them to this thread in separate posts identifying which is which.

Most importantly....when you post again please tell us how your computer is behaving now. Are your problems fixed? All OK again?

If not let us know what troubles remain.

  • Hi Pchelpman
I have tried doing what you asked and here above is the result of my husbands log.

When I attempted to go into Safe Mode by restarting and tapping F8 a blue screen came up saying:
    SM- _NEC DVD_RW ND - 3550a
    PM-ST3160021A
    Realtek boot Agent
there was nothing there about HJT, is this correct or have I done somthing incorrect?

Thank you for your patience and time.

I had the same problem when I purchased my PC the other year, the way I got round it was going into internet options and changing the homepage back to the one I wanted then I downloaded a free program called "perfect process shield" which stops any hijackers screwing with the PC and you will get a warning saying that the homepage wants to chnage from ....... to ...... and do you want to accpet changes or not. Sice having the software I have had no problems with homepage hackers (touch wood)
