I am looking for advice on how to stay in contact with relatives that are in Malaysia, just wondered if anyone has phoned Malaysia from a B.T. line in the Uk and if so what is the best and most cost effective way to do this. I beleive there are numerous ways of doing this.
Also has anyone any knowledge on the use of global sim cards, I am on T Mobile contract at the moment, but I have heard of the global sim going into a mobile phone for use abroad without the roaming costs and zero cost to receive calls.

You already know the cheapest way to phone Malaysia from a UK Landline (1p a minute) see your posting here today.http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=129047
For Global Sims you might find this thread helpful.

You can call Malaysia for just 1 pence per minute from a BT landline by dialling the following access number:
0844 8615959 followed by 00 60x xxxxxxx and then the # key.
You will be charged for the call as soon as you have dialled the 0844 access number even though it may be engaged at the other end or nobody answers the phone. However, a voice message will tell you if this is the case and give you the option to hang up (and just incur the minimum charge of 5p) or dial a different number.0 -
AP, can you give us the source of the number you mention or the company involved please0

No they don't BUT i saw posted on this site previously several orange numbers (not supplied from SF) that work too & if the T-Mobile has x-net minutes will work for Free calls also...
***As there is no source given for the numbers posted I have had to remove them, thank you Board Guide***

blinker, you probably also saw that until information on the provenance of the numbers was available, they wouldn't be published - they may be for someone's private use0

Thanks AP
I have tried calling the number you stated above, but with no success. I called 0844 8615959 followed by 0060 ......#. A voice stated the call would be 1p/min. after I had dialled the whole number a voice stated that I needed to put in 00 at the start, which I had done. Could I possibly have dialled the international number too soon. What have I done wrong. Help would be much appreciated.0 -
You can start dialling 0060 xxxxxxxxx # as soon as it says 'Call charges are ...' - you do not have to wait until the end of the announcement. You may have just pressed the 00 too fast (in terms of speed) and the system did not register. If there are any error messages, just follow the instruction and go through the menu system to dial the number again while you are still in the same call.
The menu system will then say, 'Main Menu - If you would like to make another call, press 1, ... etc'.
I use this number to ring my mum and dad in Hong Kong for about half an hour every fortnight and there is no problem at all with connection and the call quality is superb.0
