Papalazarou - I will miss mvc because it had a good selection of non-chart music, which is not usually available in Asda or Morrisons. I only bought there occasionally though, and only after searching out prices at other locations!
I do support the independent shop you are on about. I gave them £3000 worth of cds and other music related merchandise to sell on my behalf - they get to keep a good percentage of the money (60% I think). I really like the shop and the people who run it.
Most of the stuff I get nowadays is off the internet or in bargain sections now anyway!
It is good to know that there are people on here who live near me! :xmastree:
ps. wanna buy some pegs dave?0 -
Its terrible how bad high street retailing of music has become.
I've been buying records since the mid sixties.
In those days there were loads of little shops/department stores all with their own record department, and I used to love flicking through the racks looking for bargains.
One shop in Norwich,Wilson and Ramshaws finally closed in 1978,having been there since the early 1900's.
They sold the entire stock of 7" singles to a local second hand shop. They never had a sale,so there were mint singles going back to 1953 at 35p each.
I bought £30 worth.
Loads of pickings like that as the old shops closed one by one.
Now its just HMV/Virgin with manipulated prices and small supermarket selections. Two years back WH Smith shrunk their audio department to the shoebox size we have now.
Internet only for me now0 -
tomstickland wrote:Story in paper tonight, MVC have gone into administration. Shops are selling stock off reduced in price. Might be worth a look in the next few weeks.
Worth bearing in mind that just because a company goes into administration does not necessarily mean that it will close down or indeed sell off stock at lower prices than had it not gone into administration. All it means is that someone has been appointed to run the company in place of the previous board and owners for the purpose of protecting the interests of creditors. That may mean closing, selling off or, often, continuing to run the business albeit usually with changes, possibly including closing some stores, to improve its prospects. Often the better sales are those set up by management prior to administration/receivership/liquidation as a last desperate attempt to recover cash.0 -
The article in the paper said that they were selling off stock cheaply.Happy chappy0

No ones yet mentioned that MVC is now owned by Musiczone, they bought it from Woolworths in August. 40 of the stores are being kept while the rest are being shut. here in Hull we're having our branch shut.
Went in on the first day the of 10-30% sale and found that they will NOT accept more cards and only seem to be accepting gift vouchers bought since August although they're maybe acceptions.
Most of the chart DVD's and CD's have been removed and yes the back catalogue has reverted to near full RRP before being discounted. Did manage to pick up series 3 of Blakes 7 for £28 though.0 -
papalazarou / S-J-Cooper - so there are a few of us Kendalians on here, I rarely buy cd's more a radio person so haven't had a need to try the independent in town, I take it this is the place to go for local bands material
I'm a DVD person and tend to follow the double disc for less than a tenner rule when buyer, I'm happen to wait and don't mind waiting a weeks from ordering to come through the post.
Good buys for me on the high street have been :-
war of the Worlds 2 disc £5
incredibles 2 disc £10
BTTF Trilogy £15 - if I waited a couple of years £13 plus extra disc
Recent best internet buys have been :-
All pixar movies upto Finding Nemo £6 each
Red Dwarf S1,2,3,6 £6.50 each, S7 £8.99
The Lakes S1&2 £9
The 3 LOTR Extended editions, £8.50 each0 -
I am astounded that they are refusing to accept gift vouchers, I do not know what the legal situation is with a company in administration but is this allowed? or would the customer have to apply to the receivers to get the money back? You're my wife now!!0
-
They are accepting vouchers now in my local store and another poster has mentioned that there store are accepting ones brought since august and the ones brought before then can be used in woolworths anyway.0

would the customer have to apply to the receivers to get the money backYou don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0

Our local store is claiming to be in "liquidation" and refusing to accept ANY refunds, exchanges or vouchers.
A handwritten poster in the window states that all vouchers or faulty stock have to be sent to head office with a written request for refund.
Is this legal? Can they refuse to refund/replace faulty stock? I have a dvd that won't play, & £50 of vouchers that mr bottlered bought just days before christmas0
