  • I hate this store. went into my local MVC today and found that chart DVD's were priced £18.99 each (£10.99 - £11.99 in the supermarkets), however if you bought two you got the second half price so you only pay the best part of £30.00 for the 2!

Is it any suprise that the industry is having so many problems with pirated media? these stores are taking the P!

No wonder they are closing down!!

By the way a Happy New Year to everyone!

  • I have almost enough to get my discount on my MORE card with them so was looking for something cheap but nothing at all :-(

Before Christmas I bought some DVD's for £5 each which weren't bad but they were all full price now!

MVC's prices are horrendous and so is their customer service. I was in there a few days before Christmas and the woman infront of me handed in a receipt to pick up an item she'd ordered in. The girl at the desk informed her that it wouldn't be in before Christmas, or probably at all now since they were closing down. Since she'd paid in full already (two weeks earlier) she had to write to the company to get her money back (including paying for postage, which isn't much but its still paying to get her own money back!!) The woman turned around and started chatting to us and said there was no chance of her getting another of whatever she'd ordered before xmas. You would have thought they would have had the courtesy to notify her. I hate when companies just dont bother to tell you.

Living in a small town my options are limited when it comes to buying DVD's. The Cave was £16.20 in the MVC sale yet only £12.99 on play.com. I opted to wait the 3-5 days for delivery from play.

I cant remember how long the 'more' card has been running in MVC but since I've had one I've only managed to get £5 off on one occasion.

Incidentally Play.com are having a sale on some Disney DVD's, as if they weren't seriously cheaper than MVC to begin with.

E.g. Sword and the stone £18.99 in MVC. £7.99 on play.com. A saving of £11.
Disney DVD's are collectable too so when they stop making them you can always sell them on ebay and make a profit if you and your kids are bored of them by then :p

you have to be careful with any purchases from mvc - my husband bought a CD as a christmas present there and the cardboard sleeve was torn at the top, which of course being a man he didn't notice, and by the time I spotted it as I was wrapping it up, it was too late to go back and change it
Not buying clothes for a year - it's liberating!
  • There is a sign in the Kendal mvc saying that they will not be accepting the MORE points anymore and that they may not accept any gift vouchers!
  • Taunton MVC's "sale" is awful too... and to make it worse there's a sign on the door saying "please do not swear at, or abuse our staff. They are here to help you."

With the prices of the DVDs and CDs so high, I'm not surprised they're going bust. I'll be happy to see them go!

Didn't MVC used to be owned by Woolworths anyway?

MVC, Woolworths, Superdrug, Comet, Screwfix Direct & B&Q all used to be under the Umbrella of Kingfisher - who decided to stick with DIY - sold off the other brands with mountains of debt, keeping B&Q, Screwfix Direct and its french counterpart Castarama.
I think these stores that were sold are having difficulty in making profit, largely due to the debt that they have started with. Only time will tell for the others.

Price wise MVC went down hill when they were sold off during the summer, which probable proves what buying power Woolworths had when they ran MVC.

Once MVC goes in Kendal we'll be left with small sections from Woolworths, WH Smiths and the supermarkets. MVC over the pass few months has been the same as 'Our Price' before they went, just not trying, all competition in the high street has gone

I've found in the last 18mths that there are no decent deals on the high street for dvd's, just stores trying to maniplate none deals, buy 2 for X, BOGOF (but the prices are twice as much), BOGO half price

Internet is where 95% of my dvds are bought from now

I haven't bought a new CD or DVD for 2 years now, it all comes from Ebay for me, or Amazon if they've got a good deal.
    Happy chappy
  • LakeUK and S-J-Cooper, it was the Kendal store that I was on about. There is no need to shop on the high street for DVD's and CD's when we have 2 decent supermarkets within walking distance of the town.

Even better if you can shop on the internet but people do not always want to wait days for delivery.

If you must buy in the high street steer clear of the big names and support the small independent record shop at the back of the wine bar, it is usually more competetive anyway.

ps. the shop mentioned above is in no way connected with me, I just don't like to see these big stores ripping people off!
