02504 is the current meter reading but that doesn't make any sense. Does that actually mean around 250 now? Because current meter readings only have 3 digits. Also, it looks like a very new meter so it could have been changed? The date on the meter is not very clear.

The huge bill is a result of the period back in Jan/Feb

This is a list of the sub-bills:

    Bill A

    Previous ( estiimated 22nd Jan 2008) -3192
    Current (estimated 8th Feb 2008) -4626

This gives a bill for £1100.47p

    Bill B

Previous (estimated on 8th feb)- 4626
Current (read by us on 14th April)- 191

This gives a bill for £4,835.68

    Bill C
Previous (read by us on 14th April) - 191
Current ( read by us on 17th July) - 213

This gives a bill for £29.95

    Bill D

Previous (read by us on 17th July) -213
    Current ( estimated on 22 August)- 219

This gives a bill for £8.23

    Bill E

Previous (estimated on 22 August) -219
    Current ( estimated on 15th Oct)-229

This gives a bill for £19.59

The problem occurred before 14 April, and you need to dig back to a bill before then with an actual reading. It looks like your meter has been changed after the last reading before 14 April.

For an elec bill the meter serial number is on the bill. Check if its on you gas bill and that it matches. Make sure that the current reading you have posted does not include the tenths because 0250 makes more sense than 02504. Get byou supplier to check with National Grid Transco if a meter exchange has occured that your supplier has not been told about. Again in elec when they change a meter they attach a tag with the date and exchange readings. See if there is anything like that on your gas meter.

The meter has got a sticker on it but the numbers are not very clear and the date of exchange is barely visible.

I'd go with spiro and do your utmost to check your meter serial number matches the bill. On new elec meters there's a bar code and the mtr serial number is written by that.

The fact all your reads before the possible new meter are estimates suggests it is a meter exchange that Eon haven't been told about and their system just assumes it's the same meter and has gone right round the clock.

I have managed to dig up the old bill but thats got estimated readings too.

The meter number on the bills is always 920

When i look at the gas meter ( difficult to read) with the sticker on it , i find:

    OLD METER NUMBER - 0xxx7920
    OLD METER INDEX - 2537
NEW METER INDEX- ( left blank!)
    DATE: 1_5_7

    _ is just blank?

So i don't know what the new meter number is?

The bar code has something like

    G4 A008xxxx6 07 01 2007
  • Gas mtr serial numbers are usually stamped on the meter under the plastic window you read the meter through.

The old mtr serial number is the 920 figure, your new mtr serial number should be the G4 number, all you need now is the date it was exchanged and Eon will be able to resolve it easily for you tomorrow.

You may want to edit your post and remove or X out some of the mtr serial number just in case someone decides to play silly games with your gas account.
  • Sorry, just looked at the figures a little more. It could be that this mtr ex is old and the meter was replaced when the reading reached 2537. Since you were estimated up to 4626 in Feb this year it could the the date you said was 1_5_7 is 1st May 2007 (and it would have been zero on the new mtr at the installation date).

You've possibly changed mtr types (Imperial to metric) so the actual cost you can expect is a little harder to work out, although it's certainly not the bill you have. There's a chance you've been over-charged to the extent that you may have paid too much in 2007 but don't get your hopes up yet, Eon will confirm this when you call.
