Pay As You Go Phone £5 + £10 airtime

  • I have fallen for this one, not once but twice and I have to warn people to just not do it! I was persuaded to purchase my phone on orange. You pay for the phone and the credit. You recieve the phone and the credit is supposed to be applied to your account when you activate it. What they didnt tell me was that I had to purchase credit before they would activate my account, this meant extra money to spend! Not only that the phone and sim came but the sim in the box had no telephone number on it. This meant endless phone calls to orange and many foreign call centres to try and speak to someone who might understand that I had a Phone and a Sim but no phone number in order to top up, and then get my ten pound credit! Very frustrating! The best of it was, when i eventually got my phone number and topped up my phone, some weeks later, I made several trips to the carphone warehouse to get my ten pounds credit, had some very rude staff tell me that they had by this time changed there policies! Never did get my ten pounds credit, in fact it actually cost me a fortune in petrol and phone calls and I will NEVER buy from them again!!! GGGGRRRRRR:mad:

Hold on, this sounds too good to be true. Or have they made a mistake?

Assuming you are on Orange PAYG and you have an old phone laying around, you could do the following...
    1. Get said deal for £5 (with £10 trade-in discount). Use credit on existing phone and keep new phone in drawer. As long as the phone you traded in wasn't better than having this new phone (the fact that it's brand new should help to ensure that) then you've got £10 credit for £5.
    2. Then get the same deal again, this time trading in the phone you got the first time! This time you are swapping like for like phones and still getting £10 credit for £5.
    3. Repeat as many times as you like. (Or until you get barred?)

Obviously the limit is how much PAYG credit do you want, but at half price you could get a few months worth.
Or could you sell this credit?

    Too good to be true?
    Have I missed something?

Carphone Warehouse do a £10 trade in deal, when you purchase a new pay as you go phone.

So if you go in and buy the samsung b130 and trade in a old crapy phone which you have lying around at home you would end up getting the samsung b130 for £4.95 now thats got to be a bargain.

But you not only need the phone but the charger and the instruction booklet to get the ten pounds apparently.

If I buy online will the top up come separately? I'd like to put it on my existing sim card.

    Thanks

I would like to know this too please. Also my current sim is Virgin - I want to keep the Virgin sim and number, would it work in the Samsung b130 phone on offer if I get it on T-Mobile (as same network) and if so could I then add the £10 airtime to my Virgin sim?

My old (cheapo) mobile is knackered it keeps switching itself off for no reason, takes ages to charge and battery life is much shorter than it used to be so I need a cheap replacement.

    Thanks.

  • The samsung b130 from carphone warehouse comes unlocked sim free.

The credit they give you with the phone is on the sim card supplied with phone.

    JUST A QUICK BREAKDOWN:

    samsung b130 £4.95 + you have to buy £10 airtime = £14.95

    £14.95 - £10 trade in (old handset) = £4.95

2 per customer and you have to pay with credit or debit card

Can I clarify two points with you.
First are you saying that what jyoung693 encountered was not correct? How could he have been given a sim card with no number?
Secondly again I have been told it is not just old handset but the charger and booklet aswell. Are you saying different?

never put off buying a bargain today,it may be gone tomorrow
  • are both the nokia and the samsung sim free? I want a cheapie mobile for my DD for xmas but want to put it on asda mobile as the calls/texts are cheap - would this work? can I definitely put the top up onto an existing sim instead? (eg my o2 card)

  • we decided to risk it and bought one of the nokias today and answered my own questions

we used dh old o2 no to "upgrade" and just paid £10 for the phone - no top up required :D we tried his asda mobile sim in it and it accepted that too - and we have an old vodafone and that sim worked in it too

apparantly you can only "upgrade" with o2 - any other network and you have to get a new sim (i think)

    hth someone else :)
