I've been Money Tipped!
I urgently need to get some virus software on our pc.

We were given this pc by a friend who had paid for antivirus (can't remember which it was now) but it was due to be renewed today but we are looking for a decent free download programme.

Can someone please tell me which is the best free antivirus software please?

Many thanks.

  • Haven't tried the combined comodo firewall and anti virus but the firewall on its own got excellent reviews from the "experts". I found the latest version a little complicated with lots of pop-up alerts requiring action so switched a few months to sunbelt kerio fireall and it works well (even the limited free version which comes into action after a month gets good reviews)

As far as anti virus is concerned I previously had free AVG but when version 8 came out switched to free Avira Anti Vir - thankfully in view of recent "horror story" about disastrous False Positive.

Don't forget anti spyware as well as firewall and anti virus. Sybot and Ad Aware are both good - and both free !!
  • Sorry for typo - it should be Spybot !!

Out of the Free ones I have found Antivir to be the lightest on resources and also has excellent detection rates. So imo, Antivir.

I would recommend Avast. I use it on 5 of my PC's/Laptops and have for quite some time. I wouldn't touch AVG if you are running Vista and have Parental Controls turned on as I could never get it to download virus definitions automatically.
If I have helped in any way, and you feel like it - please press the thanks button

    Thanks folks.

    We went for the Avast.

My husband said it found 4 things when it did a boot scan, spyware or adware or something even though we were using Zonealarm.

I thought it was a bit slow before, didn't realise how much until now.

Id recommend downloading MALWAREBYTES too then, as theres a good chance you still have something on it!

    UPDATE and FULL SCAN

If it finds anything, post the log here AFTER youve deleted the nasties
(Malwarebytes doesnt use any resources, its JUST a scanner)
