ecangel, I feel so sorry for you. How can you possibly study - or even live a normal happy life in this sort of situation? No wonder you are not telling your mum.
Really, the best way to sort out bills normally in a flat sharing situation like yours - if you are not all like minded - is to be metered. OK, it is a pain in the ar*se when someone has to go to the local pay point when you run low (there is the opportunity to never totally run out, as there is emergency credit on both gas and elec meters) but at least you all pay approximately the same amount. It still doesn't mean the split will be fair...you would probably still be paying for them to have their heaters on if they are so energy unaware...but at least they would see how much it was costing every month.
I am not sure how the question of people not being in at the same time etc comes into it. Effectively, you are paying for them to have sex in a hothouse....fifty five per month is a LOT.
We live in sunny, warm (not) Aberdeen, and my son pays about seven pounds a week onto his electricity meter, (elec panel heaters in bedrooms, telly, washing machine, x box etc) and gas is about ten a month in total (gas cooker, energy saving fire) Over on another thread I was going on about how I had over compensated for my son as a single parent, and now he is in a flat of his own I wonder if I should be helping him with his bills. His step father and me are Landlords. My problem is that I don't want him to freeze, but his flatmate is taking advantage of this, and has the gas fire on when my son is not in, knowing that I would never let it get to the point where there was no money on the meter in the winter. (My son by the way never has it on...never feels the cold (plenty 'padding' lol) , the flatmate is a skinny wee thing!)
I would seriously tell your flatmates you are not willing to pay the amount you are paying, and ask to have a word with the Landlord. You don't mind paying your share, but over that, you will not be taken for a mug.Life.

Thank you for the advice Rikki. I think before I started this thread I already knew I'd probably just have to accept it, theres not long to go now and i've got my first christmas at home for 2 years to look forward to.Your lucky you have your brother to talk to. Its like telling the family if you know what I mean.
. (Parent sometimes are more aware of things than you give them credit for. We are nosey by nature when it concerns our children
)
As you don't have so long to go, maybe just accept it and concentrate on your future. Soon you will be well away from all of this and later years you will look back and laugh.We'll maybe just amazed you got through it.
I have a good relationship with my son and sometimes I think it scares him when he realises the tales hes telling me. :rotfl: Mind you I won't be asking him about the strip club again or the trip to Amsterdam. :eek: :rotfl:
Haha! what happens in amsterdam shoudl definetly stay in Amsterdam! I've learnt that from years of uni rugby tours!
I think my mum and dad know that i'm not loving my house, I think they think possibly because im not living with friends. My mum has manic depression and her nerves arent very good, i've put her through hell the last 20 months or so when i was ill. She hasnt been coping very well and I wouldnt like to make it worse. And my dads going into hospital on Monday, for a big operation, I think he's also got enough stress. I've told one brother, just because I needed some advice on how to interact really with people like my housemates! We havent told my other brother either becuase he's a very over protective barrister who specialises in tenancy disputes!0 -

:eek: My youngest plays rugby. He's still at school so no tours to Amsterdam yet. Phew.:rotfl:
I think I only got a diluted version from the older son. If not he missed a few bits.
Sometimes we all know the answers to our questions but we just need to ask someone else to see if we have the right answer. Occasionally the words of strangers can prove very useful.

If I was your Mum, I would be very proud of you. Coming onto money saving sites like this, and not wanting to worry your family - you sound like one sorted lad. (This from a Mum who's own son posts videos of himself face down in a tub of butter on youtube and never answers his mobile....)
If you have been ill....turn the heating on in your room, and make sure you are long gone before the last bill comes in. Might as well get your £55 a month's worth.
Hope you get it sorted. And hope you don't play 'hooker'.....:eek:Life.
