How would you handle this situation

I have two issues with my DD school at the moment. Issue 1. the kids started back at school last Tuesday after half term, I forgot to pay her snack money of £3.50 for the term. On Wed morning whilst brushing her hair I asked her to remind me to pay the money at school that day to which she replied ' I don't get any toast at school'. I asked her why this was and she told me her teacher had told her she was not allowed any toast as she had not paid her snack money. So that day I went and saw the Head who brought her teacher in to see me. Issue 2. I asked the teacher why she had refused DD toast as it was my fault for forgetting, she told me that she had never said that and had simply told the children on Friday to remind mums and dads to pay and that maybe DD had interpreted it to mean she could not have any. - this could have been possible as DD is a very good and quite girl at school. Left it at that and paid the money. As I was leaving there was another mum waiting to see her about the same problem. Waited outside school to talk to her and was told by the other mum that half of the children had been told they were not allowed there toast!!!
I am livid that not only did this teacher refuse DD toast but she acutally LIED to my face!!!!! Have spoken to the Head but he is usless and rude tbh. What would you do in this situation? I have parents evening coming up soon so any advice would be appreciated.

It sounds like half the class did the same thing as your daughter and misinterpreted the teachers meaning... she could of made herself clearer.
I really wouldn't make an issue of it , its sounds like a misunderstanding, your daughter went without toast for one morning . You could make a big thing out of it but really is it worth the effort and upset..

  • I don't think it was a mis understanding as she sat there and told me all the kids lined up and got the toast- when if half the class have gone without surely she would have noticed? It wasn't one day either it has been since the start of half term. As DD is quite she wouldn't have told me about it either. DD teacher is the worst one in the school in order to speak to her you have to make an appointment! I am more bothered with the fact no letter was sent home, no one mentioned it when I was picking her up. To tell 15 5 year olds that they are not having there snacks because they were a week late for paying is disgusting. But the fact she has LIED has infuriated me even more.

To be fair to the school, how do they know you were going to pay? It is your responsibility to make sure you've paid for the snacks.

As for whether she lied - you don;t know this to be true you merely suspect it, and it may actually have been a misunderstanding.

I'd probably not make too much fuss if it were me.

TBH the school cannot provide snacks on the basis that parents might pay the snack money.
My son knows that if he doesn't have his snack money he gets no snack simple as that.
However i do think the bigger issue here is that the teacher lied about it.
Could it be that she was just embarrassed that she had to refuse snack to some children, I know when i was working in a school i would have felt awful having to tell little ones they couldn't have something but it has to be done.
What if she had allowed them to have snack and they never paid she would have been in trouble.

I do agree with the others on if you haven't paid the money then the school wouldn't know that you were going to pay and rightly she didn't get any toast(done this myself with breadstick and milk money where i have forgotten to pay so my little one missed out until i paid).

But the teacher lying is a whole different story, we are having probs at my sons school due to the same reason the teacher lied to my face and we have proven that she lied so its now in the hands of the school, i also remember quite vividly when i was at high school my teacher lying to my parents and it went on for weeks where it was his word against mine, and he would runb my nose in it when ever he got the chance, so i took my dads dictaphone to school and recorded him and then gave it to my parents to listen to, he was actually fire in the end for a similar reason. Not saying you should do the above but i am saying that i know that some teachers do lie(whilst i'm not saying your daughters one has done so)

Why are they charging snack money for 5 years old anyway. UNder the government fruit and veg scheme I thought all Key Stage One children got a free pice of fruit each day for their snack. Might be worth chasing that one up.

We used to take ours in with us.
Half a round of sugar sandwich, the better off had cocoa!

Name written across the top and passed to Miss Purvis who would then ceremoniously place it in a wooden box. We enjoyed it later with sour, smelly milk.

As for OP, difficult. Surely for one day only, the pupils could have received toast. But then, some Mums remembered, some did'nt.
  • My DD takes her own snack with her every day. I forgot to give her her lunch money the other day but she was given a dinner ticket and she took the money in to school the next day. Seems like common sense to me, rather than letting a child go hungry.

DD is in Yr 2 and she gets the fruit/veg, however, you can also buy toast at the morning break.

To the OP - I have 1 child in sixth form, 1 in Yr10, and the youngest in Yr 2 and over the years have come across situations where it has been necessary to both complain to school AND seek their support - some battles are not worth fighting and in my opinion this is one of them.

If the parents of half the class are 'forgetting' to pay up, I'm surprised the school can afford to offer snacks at all.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
