Can you please advise me on the model number of the Sony DVD Player and what the connection type into the DVD Player is as you say it isn't a scart? If you aren't sure what the connection into the DVD Player is, let me know the model number and I will try and find out myself.

Have you checked the plug in the back of the DVD Player is firmly pushed in?

    Many thanks, tigermatt :)

Sorry, missed your question for some reason, the DVD player is a Sony DAV S550

the dvds I am trying to play are PAL

either you need to adjust the a/v channel you are viewing the film on, your scart is plugged into the wrong scart socket on your tv or your tv is not rgb compatible.

oh and the film you want to watch, it isnt an old film in black and white is it?
what is the plural of moose?

  • If your dvd player has no scart, unless it has colour coded red green and blue phono sockets marked either 'y pb pr' or 'y u v' it is unlikely to have RGB capability. The next 'best' signal to use is 's-video'. Make sure your DVD 's output signal type is set to this. On your tv make sure the scart input signal type is set to the same. Hopefully this should solve your problem. With some tellys only one of the scart sockets (normally AV2) accepts s-video signals. You need to check.

If there is an incompatibility between the signals this sometimes manifests itself as a black and white picture.

  • it has the 3 colour coded sockets but we are using the s video out which is labeled DVD only and that is plugged into the scart shown as AV2 at the back of the tv. I've pulled them out and replugged and now can't get anything at all !

Try a different scart lead... That usually does the trick

  • Without knowing how your tv's connections and workings it's difficult to offer specific advice. If however your dvd player and your new telly has the connections labelled 'y pb and pr' this would be the best quality connection to use. However as the previous poster has commented you may need a different scart if your current fault is intermittent. Was the connection on your last telly also a scart or an svideo plug (a 4 pin DIN type) connection?

    I have now got a b&w picture back !

previous tv was also a sony and we have connected the new sony in exactly the same way, on the old tv we used to have to press the button on the remote with the tv screen and the arrow pointing in 3x before it would go colour and it played fine. we haven't changed leads and the one connecting from dvd to tv is the s video cable

    TV connections
    4 Pin (Y/C) In YES
    Digital out YES
    MiniJack (Head/Earphone) (mm) 3.5
    PCMCIA Card Slot YES
    RCA AV Input YES
    Scart 1 RGB
    Scart 2 RGB
    HDMI YES

From that it seems that neither of the Scarts are able to deal with a component input so you aren't getting the colour portion of the signal.

So either buy a S-VHS to S-VHS (4 pin Y/C) or Scart to Scart lead.
  • Right, I suspect your tv is receiving an svideo signal from the dvd player. An svideo on a tv set to the composite (or normal) input will show up as a black and white picture. On your DVD player look in the set up menu for a 'TV output type'. Switch the svideo to composite, vice versa, or on and off. See if this makes a difference.

When I try the menu its not giving me any output options
