  • You should be able to get one (and the refills) from your doctor. I went on an awareness day when I was diagnosed and everyone was given one, and shown how to use it.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

yes kitty you should, still good to have a spare :)
  • All the meters are a great way of helping you control your diabetes. All the companies will renew your meter to update it to latest model as they want you to use their strips which you get on NHS. They cost a fortune as I and all other diabetics used to have to pay for them. Each manufacturer uses different strips.
  • On another, but similar note. My friend is diabetic and finds eating raw onion or cinnamon will bring her blood sugars down drastically. She especially recommends the cinnamon powder, which she mixes with diet coke.

Yeah, they told me that each strip costs 50p! If you were testing before and after every meal that would be £1095 a year!

  • I dont wish to be a wet blanket but I've heard all this before, eating cabbage, raw onion etc. It works only because you are eating nothing else and theres no carbohydrate. There really is no substitute for a BALANCED diet. (38 years a diabetic)

Totally agree with you, but there is evidence that taking a teaspoon of cinnamon powder daily, alongside your normal diet does help in the control of your blood sugar. I have been told this by my diabetic nurse and also read it in various medical books.

I have been diabetic for over ten years and can recommend these portable testing machines whichever make you decide to opt for.
