  • Yes...err, pain is in the mind as well as the body, clearly. What was your point? That pain in the mind is therefore superficial and non-treatable??

No not really. i would say though that there are some who creep around with various aches and pains but who are either bone idle or have hung their boots up for some other reason eg attention seeking.

Pain is a natural warning sign.

    we all have it,
I have pain too but iget on with life. I dont creep round the doctors bleating about it . I have a normal job and get on with earning a living.

If some of these people had to pay each time they visited the docs or paid for scripts, they would have a lot less pain i'll wager.
  • I agree pain is the bodies way of telling you you've over done it or something isn't right.

My docs great, but it took me 6 months to get my gp to refer me to hospital because I had pain so bad that came out of nowhere that I could hardly walk by the end of it. One simple blood test found lots of inflammation and is now being treated.

What an ignorant comment. NOT everyone suffers from chronic pain  What is your medical background? Pain has a memory and neurological pathways become damaged over time.

Often those who suffer from chronic pain are not lucky enough to "have a normal job". People like myself are often bedbound, in agony and unable to move. Other times vomiting and passing out in pain. To get washed, dressed, travel to work and concentrate and interact with others is a huge task when you're suffering from ongoing, persistant and overwhelming pain. Makes going to "a normal job" quite difficult wouldn't you say? I know personally i would do just about anything to be able to use my education to have "a normal job" and "get on with life".

I agree. I am 17 and the doctors tell me I have severe sciatica(sp?) with an underlying cause. They tell me not to get over stressed otherwise I could have a stroke. My GP was great about refering me and prescribing medication. I have been told i'll have good days and bad but most likely suffer from some sort of pain for the rest of my life. I am lucky in the respect that my school kept me on for sixth form and offered me a part time job in the morning running a club before school but am dreading the 'outside' world as I have no idea how a prospective employer would cope with the constant absences and the pain. I will cope but am scared about what will happen after college and university(hope i get there!).

  • I totally understand where you are, my problems started at 14 when i had major spinal surgery. I was in a body brace/bed bound for a long time so had to leave school as they weren't willing to do any home tutoring. I managed to get through evening classes at college for A levels and then straight into uni at 17.

TBH i'd always assumed i would be fit and healthy by 18 but it just didn't happen, no matter how hard i tried or how much i wanted it. After almost a decade of suffering i was finally told there was nothing they could do to stop the pain as it's too dangerous. It was a big blow, but i've tried to accept it as much as i can and live accordingly. I've learnt the hard way NOT to push yourself, much better to do 80% of what you can and keep on an even keel. Don't worry about uni. Most of them are very helpful if you have a chat with their special needs/disability advisors. Just keep at it and everything will fall into place :)

I am in a situation where I am a Carer for my Dh but in the last couple of years I have had real pain in my back and hands joints etc. It has got so bad that I feel my back is sometimes about to snap and I have to sit on my hunkers wherever I am till the pain is bearble. I wake in the morning and I cannot get out of bed, when speaking to the Doctor, she thinks because my life is extremely stressful that is what is causing the pain. I am eating painkillers like smarties, is it just stress, you see, I feel my life would be much better and I could handle things so much better if I didn't feel as though I had been run over. Sorry to twist, just wondered what others experiences are. Thanks X
  • I think that pain is alot harder to deal with when your emotional/stressed/overworked/exhausted, but it doesn't mean there isn't a root cause. If the pain killers aren't touching it though then i wouldn't keep taking them as they can cause other problems and you'll become immune to them anyway. Maybe worth trying other things? heat, massage, some sort of gentle activity. Sorry you're having to put up with it, i hope things get better/easier to cope with.

I would question, then, how severe your pain is if you think you can just "get on with earning a living". Is there no possibility in your mind that some people may have pain much much worse than what you feel?
