Thanks OP - signed and forwarded.
My husband, and two out of three children, are HMS sufferers (thankfully the youngest has recently been judged clear of it), and my husband also has other disabilities to contend with, so we know how pain can affect life.
My husband has spent the last 7 years in constant pain with little or no real help, not even half decent medication, for most of that time. Most profesionals we come across just aren't interested - even when he had two years of weeping, MRSA infected, lymphodema undiagnosed and virtually untreated and unmedicated - the pain with that could be unbearable at times - he'd describe it as like having dogs constantly gnawing at his legs.
The worst affected my sons can be lying there screaming and in tears with the pain of his visibly inflamed joints, and the doc will just say to give Calpol.
Something has got to change with how pain is perceived and dealt with - I'm glad you brought this group to my attention.DFW Nerd no. 884 - Proud to [strike]be dealing with[/strike] have dealt with my debts0 -
No problem - they have quite a good brochure you can order by e-mail that let's you know about their campaign and I know a few people who have taken it to reluctant GPs...and then they have suddenly been reffered to a specialist or pain management centre!0

What's everyones experience of saying to their doctor that they suffer from pain?0

My doctor knows i suffer from pain, he was the one who got me carted off to hospital, but when i asked for a referal to a pain management course, he said that they wouldnt be able to help me.
Also, he never reviewed my medication in 8 years, despite me seeing when i was in agony. It took a new locum to assess the problem & prescribe new tablets.0 -
My doctor thinks there is nothing wrong with me. He was good in giving me a referral to the hospital so I could get a diagnosis but thats all he's done.0

So if women are more susceptible to pain or feel it differently, surely there should be a MAN tab?0 -

I can't give you any links I'm afraid , but the NHS is recruiting more 'pain' doctors for Hospital trusts and those doctors will over the course of training end up as full consultants specialising purely in pain management.
There still won't be enough to see everyone that needs them in a short time frame, but the fact that this area of management is expanding is a good thing and means that someone somewhere is listening.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Thanks for that - let's hope that it continues and that patients are told what services are on offer and what options are open to them.0

I suspect that a lot of people suffer from non specific pain simply becuase of psychological issues.0
