Heh, an entertaining thought, but not really such a good idea - though it does sound like it, doesn't it! ;) Now a meter is in, all that would do is make the monthly payments too low, and the resulting underpayment would have to be made up the next time the meter was actually read.

Workinmummy, glad to hear everthing seems to have been sorted! Odd that there should have been estimated readings when there is no meter existing, though - has any explaination been offered on that front?

Got to love that.."it should be..there..ah.."..

When I moved into our previous flat, I got a water bill through saying I was on a meter..now, the agent didn't say this..and I couldn't see it.

Called STW - "It's in a boundary box outside your property by the disabled sign."

Went outside, looked...no, disabled sign not there, never been one there either according to neighbours. Called STW back and explained..they sent a guy out to meet me. It was eventually located buried with 7 others (the other flats!), under the loose stone public access road/grass bank.

What fun that was. No idea where they got the idea about the disabled sign, mind you..heh..

They dont make the location of the meters up.
Meter readers will get a bonus for reading a certain amount of meters each month so it is in there best interest to know the location of the meters.
The location of the meter on the water companies system is what the meter reader uses to locate the meter.
Roads change, signs move, and people forget.
This does not mean that the meter reader who has read the same meter for the last 10 years will record the fact that the disabled sign has been removed (he does not need to as he knows where the meter is).
This is why records fall out of date.
STW sent out a representative to locate your meter and update there records.
Once again i find someone complaining when there issue has been rectified and delt with.
What more can be expected of STW ??

Meter readers get a bonus for reading so many meters every month

Not round here,i wish it was ;)

Even if the meter reader has been reading for 10 years its part of his job to keep records up to date, (when agencys are used or its outsourced thats when problems start as they need to hit targets to earn a decent wage)
  • I use to get a bonus for gaining a certain amount of readings each month.
I have since moved into the office and I am dealing with the billing side of things.
I hope things have not changed that much lol

  • If anyone had a water meter, why would they bury it deep or be under debris to the extent that you can't find it? Shouldn't it be easily found and accessible?? That is the case for gas meters - so why is it different for water metres?
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

They are meant to be visable but alot of the time they will get covered by other people, eg council when renewing footpath etc, or when new turf is laid etc etc

I am gobsmacked by the average family water usage figures. We use 1 cubic metre every quarter between two of us! Mr. Fire Fox showers daily, I shower a couple of times a week (shower at work the rest of the time!!), we wash up once a day and do washing three times a week I would think. I do make Mr. Fire Fox turn the tap off when he is brushing his teeth and washing up tho.
