Virgin Vs Tiscali

Have been reading Martins book and looking to reduce the cost of phone calls (going up over the last few bills)
I am currently on Plan 3 with Virgin at the moment paying £14.99 for the 512K service with 3Gb Cap per month.
I am looking to switch to Tiscali on their Up to 1Mb Broadband and free weekend calls package again for £14.99
Its a no brainer at the moment as I gain extra speed on the boardband and free weekend calls on 01/02 geo numbers - is there any catch with this type of service? Or Tiscali any good?
Thanks
Mike

Tiscali are (in my experience by proxy through family members) without doubt the biggest shower of prats I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. I doubt they could collectively run a bath never mind an ISP.There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't
In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice0 -

I completely agree! Having previously used Tiscali, I would never use them again, and would happily pay far more to use any other ISP! Despite cancelling when we moved, they have still been sending me invoice emails for the last 6 months along with a couple of threatening letters to the old address. They have not attempted to charge my credit card since cancelling, so obviously understood the instruction. Also, they seem incapable of understanding simple emails, on the rare occasion that they bother to reply!
Since moving, we've been using Virgin.net and have found it completely reliable (Tiscali used to be unavailable about once every 2 weeks for me).

ah, thank you guys.
This has put things into plugging this down - I suppose that changing the Gas traff from Scottish Power to British Gas with free Phone calls at weekends/weekdays are better for me0 -
hi, i'd like to disagree, but i think i am the only one that will LOL, i have been with tiscali for a year now and have only had one problem with them, it was when i was tryin to get on it kept sayin my user name wasn't registered on the domain. There was a glitch in the system and the only thing they could do was cancell my account and set up a new one, and for the inconvenience i was give 2 months free and a £20 credit to my account............maybe i just caught them on a bad day. LOL
The only bad think i can say about them is that it takes a while to answer e-mails and it costs 50P a min to phone them up (thats probably why they resond to e-mails slowly)Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -

If its free evening and weekend calls you are after how about Primus Saver 2 see: http://www.planet-talk.co.uk/SaverProducts.aspx?source=saver
They are recommended by other money savers, and you dont have to take gas or broadband to get the deal.
As for Tiscali have a look at this site

Theres another thread on here entitled "Are Tiscali so Bad".
Having experienced them they are without doubt in my experience the most appalling customer facing organisation ever. Do not touch them with a bargepole. If in doubt, search for ADSL review, there are hundreds if not thousands of people who are desperate to end their 12 month contract early from Tiscali and who all cite the same issues.
Depends how much you are saving, but to be honest go for anyone except Tiscali. They have one of the worst reputations of any broadband provider. You will seriously regret it if you join them. Trust me!0 -
Have a search of my previous posts, and see what I think of Tosscali.

Have to agree wholeheartedly with this one, i used their "first month free" offer and cancelled when I'd ordered from another provider, now 9 months later they want every monthly payment, they will not listen to reason and you need to count yourself lucky that you have no involvement with them. Makes me laugh when people say they are ok, they haven't trying cancelling yet have they?!0 -
My mums been with Tiscali since June and has no issues with the service. A couple of other people signed up around the same time locally (South East Scotland) and don't report any problems either.
I've not dealt with Tiscali CS other than to order the service but so far so good.
They were the best deal back in the summer with no connection fees, free modem with 12 month contract and 512k down 256k up with 30GB caps.
I'm used to superfast connections in Hong Kong and the USA and the 512k service is certainly more than adequate unless you are downloading Hollywood.
We run VOIP, webcam some p2p services and have no trouble at all normally0 -
I am now looking at Toucan as my Broadband proivder with the weekend/weekday call deal for £14.99 a month. Bonus in this deal is calls to other toucan members are free (yep my mum) Just waiting for mum to get her bill from Toucan for this month to see if there is any member deals and I am aware of piggypoints on offer at the moment.0
