Agree with what else has been said here. Mrs 7799 and me now try and give consumables rather than rubbish - she bought me a dictionary I wanted for work, I bought her some bath stuff and a watch (her old one broke about six weeks ago and I dissuaded her from buying a new one which gave me a good opportunity).
I thought you wrote "I bought her some bath stuff and wanted to watch" now that would have been an even better present!!! Would have lasted longer than most too.A case of beer has 24 cans. There are 24 hours in a day...............Coincidence?0 -

Bit of an aside, but here's newsmonkey's tried and tested alternative to wrapping paper.
If you subscribe to a favourite magazine, keep the pages that look nice (big double-page spreads etc). Keep nice-looking newspaper pages too.
Then wrap presents for people in the mags/papers you've finished with. Present for a celeb fanatic? Take that double-page spread of so-and-so's wedding and use it as wrapping paper, etc etc.0 -
Our lads got too much presents, (first time ever for my son to be this flush as this is a new relationship with my OH), and we didnt even get a thank you. And then, pulling a cracker, they boys argued over the toy inside and DS2 stormed off in a mood!!!

Hooray at last, I think we have found the perfect present. Mind you too long in the bath and we may have to include anti wrinkle cream.A case of beer has 24 cans. There are 24 hours in a day...............Coincidence?0

I tried to downsize this year on the cost and effort of christmas. I tried to simply things if you like. I sent cards to those people who i am close to rather than just sending them to anyone and everyone.
I had a few pressies that i had to buy, not cause i wanted to, but because i had to which grieved me (mainly an ungrateful family who we havent seen for years but when we tried just sending a card last year, it caused a bit of an uproar).
Food wise, well i spent about £50 over my normal food budget. I didnt buy a huge turkey but rather a large chicken cause we always end up throwing masses away because we prefer food freshly cooked anyway.
The kids only had what they had asked for and there was no stocking fillers but you know what, its been the most rested, the most enjoyable of christmases we have ever had and i have never felt so relaxed on a christmas day.
We have just spent several hours watching dvds that we all enjoy and its been great.

This year was the cheapest Xmas ever for us! Normally have no problem with easily spending £1500+ on pressies, food etc, but this year we have cut this to about £200 including everything :j Only bought pressies for very close family/friends and have purchased in sales etc online throughout the year and getting some excellent bargains. We bought DD her pink DS with game pack (3 top games) and accessories for £99 on 0% for 3 months using a voucher code from here, plus she received loads of other stuff all new from either ebay or sales. DD gets spoilt from my mum and sister (new computer with flat screen monitor and Hifi system were her main pressies today plus alot of other well over priced items) they have more money than sense. She did very well
Only bought something small for each other and close friends/family got fab pressies from M&S, John Lewis, Harrods etc etc that Ive picked up stupid cheap. Have also recycled some very decent items that ive been given over the past 2 yeas and would never use.
Ive already started with the sales online today at M&S, Boots, Gameplay etc. Not all on pressies but some, for example lovely picture frames normally £20 reduced to £5 and loads of other stuff but all great quality and not cheap tat! Have spent quite alot at M&S but thought as Id saved so much over the past few months...why not. 2 beautiful large lamps ive been after for months but refusing to pay the £99 price tag, so picked 2 up today for £17DD wont need any clothes, pj's and underwear for months, and OH got a lovely pair of shoes reduced from £45 to £15 that will last him a year plus loads of other bits. Got too many items too list, but would rather spend my money on me than other people who dont apreciate it IYKWIM.

Actually this year I only got one present, from someone who does not know me well. It was a book and a very good book too! The difference is that they actually thought about me when they bought it.
Why only one present? Well I have spent the last few years convincing people that I honestly do not want anything!! In the past I would never open my cards, I would pin them unopened on the nearest notice board. People thought I was strange, but I am not, I just want to prove that Crimbo does work without loads of corporate crap.
My next plan is to spend Crimbo just with real friends............mmmmm now that will offend some family.A case of beer has 24 cans. There are 24 hours in a day...............Coincidence?0
