o2 speeds

Hi,

I've just got o2 broadband in my new house, and the speeds are really really slow....I live in South Manchester.

I called o2 and they told me there is a 'slow throughput' issue affecting the whole country! So, is anyone else experiencing horrendously slow speeds??

It's not quite the whole country, but I am also one that is affected, I'm afraid they are a victim of their own success, they assure me, and I have seen evidence, that steps are being taken to remedy the situation, they are upgrading their links at a great many exchanges, the bad news is that this could take a couple of months to complete.

    Check out the O2 Forum

  • I'm with BE and have read in various places that they share the infrastructure (I'm not sure though) My speeds haven't been affected at all.

yes, that's right, directly, O2 actually bought out Be*

Regards's speed, you're one of the lucky ones.
  • I might ask for a refund for a couple of months broadband then - nobody from o2 told me this when I opted to put my order in a week ago!

Are you sure its speed? Or are you suffering from some web pages loading slowly?

Speed can be judged on how quickly a file downloads

If you are suffering from some web pages loading slowly there has been an issue with BE/O2 relating to DNS lookup. Particularly, last Tuesday and Thursday.

This problem can be resolved by changing to OPENDNS.
    Waddle you do eh?
  • We have just switched to O2 and had really slow speeds.....however, my hubby, who fortunatly knew what he was doing thanks to working in IT, after a bit of investigation solved it - its something to do with a static IP address...but thats all I know, if you drop me a PM so I don't forget, I will see what he says this evening when he gets home and later.

That rings a bell actually....something to do with DNS as well

A DNS server just converts the URL to an IP address. You don't have to use the DNS servers maintained by your ISP - you can use a generic one like OpenDNS.

    I followed the instructions here:

been using OpenDNS on Be more or less since the start as they tend to be more reliable.

Also with regards to the OP, if it is a new house and first broadband conenction it could just be that you are a distance from the exchange and that is why it is slow regardless(the current problems though will exacerbate it more admittedly)

    Hi,

My connection has also been a bit flakey in the past 2-3 weeks. I have not just had issues with the DNS but also my speeds. I have been told thats its basically due to congestion and that my local exchange will be upgraded in the near future...not been given an exact date but apparently in the next few months!

    I also live in Manchester.
