1st time broadband (+ landline ?)

Hello,
I am about to move to a property, so I don't know what the previous tenant/landlord had re broadband.
I am only interested in broadband, that is I don't need a telephone number at all.
AFAIU, I still need a landline anyways (without an actual phone number), right?
Is there a way to avoid BT completely?
Then for the broadband, I need unlimited downloads, so what is the optimal choice here?
I'm gonna be in this property for over a year, so contract lock-in are ok.
your help is appreciated,
regards,

if your in cable area then virgin media is best choice. If not then you need a BT line connecting and your choice depends on availability (check sam knows)0
-
For unlimited downloads, are you looking for best price or optimal speed/service?0
-
something like nominal 8Mb/s, best price for that,0

I don't trust BT.
I just found out Virgin doesn't provide cable to my flat. That means the only way left is to get a BT landline, damn
My estate agent doesn't know if the landline is up or has been cut off.
Is there anyway without talking to BT to find out :-?
I could connect a phone in the flat and dial out to my cell.
1) If there is total silence, it means the line is definitely cut off.
2) If there is a tone, but dialing out fails, the line is up but the phone number is inactive. Is there a way to get the number still?

If you want to avoid BT, you could look at mobile broadband (i.e. you get a USB dongle - they run as fast as 7.2Mbps IIRC). Alternatively b/band comes 'free' with Sky subscription.
Also, don't suppliers like Tiscali & TalkTalk provide land line services (i.e. they deal with BT Wholesale so you don't have to)?0 -
TalkTalk do only broadband plan limited to 40Gb / month0

so if there is a tone, is there a way to determine the BT phone number?
was there some keys combination that gave you that?0 -
also, with BT Broadband Option 3, is it just the £24.99
or will there be also an extra monthly charge for the line rental?0 -
You could just get the BT Line reconnected and you would pay £10.50pm line rental and then get O2 Broadband at £7.50pm
O2 Broadband has unlimited downloads and fast speeds especially if your exchange has been unbundled.Waddle you do eh?0 -
I'm not a O2 customer, so that would be £12.5 on top of 10.5 = £23 pcm
do we know if BT's £24.99 includes the £10.5 line rental or not?
thanks0
