its just with microsoft office 2003 being mentioned in this thread i hoped old versions like this might be available. i just dont want to pay £100 or whatever it is just to work on my cv, especially when i cant afford it. it does seem steep when there are other types of software that do so much more and cost so much less.

As has been mentioned before, if you really must have Office, and you have a child at school, you can get Office cheap here:

  • If you're just going to be knocking a few letters together then there's no point spending money on Office because you're just not going to be taking advantage of what makes it stand out above everything else. When you're in that boat, anything that puts letters on a page and lets you change them is going to be more than adequate.

If you don't have the money / want to spend money on Office, this is one of those perfect situations when Openoffice comes out on top. It should be perfectly good enough for basic document editing, like making up / editing a CV. And it's free.

keep in mind i already have a cv etc on disc that was done on a pc that had microsoft word. as it seems the norm for cvs to appear in the format that we see in microsoft word anything else i use will need to be able to replicate that(so things like notepad are no good). so does open office allow all that? if i modify my cv with open office will it still look the same? if i put my disc into a pc with word will it look the same and would i be able to carry on after having spent time working on it using open office? i ask because from time to time i do get access to a pc with word on it.
  • Yes, the most recent version of openoffice allows for editing of standard Microsoft Word .doc files, and it look exactly the same as it would in word.

You have to manually select .doc format when saving files for the first time, because by default I believe it chooses to save in it's own native format. But as long as you choose to save in .doc format, it'll open fine when you take it to work / a friends and open it in Word.

It's free to try anyway, so you could always make sure you keep a backup of the old unedited file and try it out.
