    Ha it was actually Barclays!
Do you work for them BarclaysManager?

    Thanks for the replies!
Hopefully there will be no troubles getting the cash back!

Yes. I work for UK Retail Banking.

The ATMs are required to be balanced at least once a week as part of the branch's "rigour" checks - basically, the bank audits itself.

When they check the ATM, presuming there are no major errors, they will find one of two things: a) the machine balances at £30 over, or b) a cash "purge" has been recorded, and it will have your card number and the amount requested etc.

If the machine balances as just being £30 over, with no purge, there is no way for us to reasonably located the customer that didn't get their money, so it will just be passed to an account, and your bank will need to raise it at their end.

If it came up as a purge, Barclays will re-credit your account immediately if you're a Barclays customer, or arrange for your bank to re-credit your account.

Depending on when the machine is balanced relative to your transaction and how long the inter-bank process takes, the most this should reasonably take is 2 weeks.

I withdrew £20 from my account last November at a local Tesco and walked away without taking the money! I had to fill out a form at my local branch to claim the money back, it was totally my fault so wasn't expecting anything!

The whole process takes around 2 weeks and I got my money back in the end.
  • Don't be so melodramatic.

This seems to come up EVERY week, and there's always this accusation that the bank is stealing this money. Yes, that's right, we told that machine to keep your money and to screw you over personally.

Or you could think rationally about it: it's a machine. Problems happen. Go to your bank and tell them about it.

Every ATM will be balanced on a regular basis - to make sure it's not giving out too much money as well. And yes, that does happen. When it's next balanced, they will find £30 too much, and provided your bank has raised a query with the ATM operator, you will have no problems at all.

Yes, it's an inconvenience, yes it's a pain in the rear end, but it is not that big of a deal. They go wrong once in every 1,900 transactions (latest Wincor Nixdorf numbers). You have not been robbed.

Ooh, stropper! Have yer laughing muscles atrophied completely yet?

This would make sense if your post was clearly a joke or humourous in anyway.

  • Many years ago I had a cash machine refuse to give me money. I had a receipt at the time and it helped them to trace all the details somehow.
I always get a receipt for withdrawing money now and always will.

As for CCTV on ATM's. In some countries I've seen them (from the back office not in front of them) positioned so badly that you can actually see the PIN numbers being entered. The transaction data is then overlayed on the video without any hashing. So if the element of trust is eroded, someone has your PIN number and card number.
Be thankful they are set up much better (for the most part) in the UK !!
  • Whilst I appreciate what BarclaysManager say and agree that banks don't actualy steal the money I have found that they really dont want to help when things go wrong.

Nat West are a prime example. When a DD was applied for early I asked them if rather than charge me they could let it go through as every saturday I have money going into my account and it would be covered the manager said it is not up to them to resolve other peoples mistakes.

They were not very happy when I reminded them that the billions of pounds that the british tax payer has had to give them was not as a result of the british tax payers mistake. Still didnt do anything to help but at least I could have a laugh at the silence on the other end of the phone.

Well, until i realised they had hung up!!
One day some company will do what they say they will do and charge a fair charge.:T

Not doing the opposite of that which they promise and charge you a fortune for the privileged. :(

    Or maybe not:mad:
  • an update to the above. I appreciate still off the topic but...

Nat West just phoned me to say they have rejected the DD but and rejected it without charge. Which is perfect as I had cancelled it anyway. Ill take beck some of what I said about them being useless wastes of space haha.

You guys are never happy. Barclaysmanager gives a detailed account of what probably happened and what you should do. This should have put your mind at rest, or at least helped significantly. And all you do is ridicule him. Yes, banks deserve some stick, but this guy is helping. Messageboards like this would be lost without guys on the inside that can give informed replies.
  • Does any1 know the outcome of this thread? Did u eventually get your £30 refunded? I hate it when I read these posts & never hear the outcome! Thought Barclays manager was very helful so hope his advice was taken & Bank refunded money eventually!
