ATM Stole my money!!

Hi everyone

I'm sure this isnt in the right place but couldnt find any where else to put it!
I need some advice!

The other day I went to the cash machine and tried to withdraw £30... it thought about it for a while then told me there was an error. So I tried the machine next to it and it gave me £30 like I wanted...

I have now checked my online banking and it actually debited my account for the original £30 as well as the £30 I actually got. They have effectively stole £30 from me?!

What can I do about this and what course of action should I take?

Thanks in advance
Chris

  • tell the bank - the cashmachine should have £30 to much in there, in relation to the transactions/withdrawals.

this happened to my daughter at an ATM at her local garage. unfortunately the bank said they could find no discrepancy!!!!! toads!!!!!

I hate using cash machines for this reason as this happened to my friend, I mainly get cashback in a supermarket if i need money.
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

    Thanks for the replies guys!

I had heard once that this happened to someone and they got given compensation!

If the bank finds no discrepency, but I want to pursue the matter, do I just have to take it higher at my bank or do I have to go elsewhere?

If they don't give you the money back then I would say follow the banks official complaints procedure.
Do they have CCTV on the machine in question? Can you remember exactly what the error message was on the machine? Do you have any witnesses? I would have thought all these things would help.

If that then fails then take it to the ombudsman or maybe local paper, etc.

    Don't be so melodramatic.

This seems to come up EVERY week, and there's always this accusation that the bank is stealing this money. Yes, that's right, we told that machine to keep your money and to screw you over personally.

Or you could think rationally about it: it's a machine. Problems happen. Go to your bank and tell them about it.

Every ATM will be balanced on a regular basis - to make sure it's not giving out too much money as well. And yes, that does happen. When it's next balanced, they will find £30 too much, and provided your bank has raised a query with the ATM operator, you will have no problems at all.

Yes, it's an inconvenience, yes it's a pain in the rear end, but it is not that big of a deal. They go wrong once in every 1,900 transactions (latest Wincor Nixdorf numbers). You have not been robbed.
