Ford Mondeo - Not Satrting/Firing over

Hi

I wondered if anyone could perhaps give me any advice in relation to my car.
I have a 2000 Ford Mondeo which I last used yesterday.

I then parked it on the drive last night and everything was fine but when I went out today and start it the engine will not make any attempt at all to fire over, it turns over and the battery is a very good one, I have drained it flat trying to start it and got someone to jump it but the engine just will not fire at all.

However I tried pressing the accelerator after it wouldn't start after many attempts and depressing it to the floor the engine tries to fire over but sounds like it's only attempting to on only one cylinder.

I have checked for leaks/broken and loose wires and nothing has changed or looks out of place.

I have made my battery go flat as I say now and also had someone try and jump start it and also made my jumper start battery go flat too and the car still will not fire over, it just turns.

When I leave it for an hour or so and try again the first time I try the engine smells of fuel but soon disappears and you don't smel it again.

Any advice would be great as looking like might need to get it recovered.

Also there is a full tank of fuel in the car and there have been no faults within the last year with it.

Thanks

  • is there a picture of a key or anything on the dash board? try the spare key incase its an immobiliser issue
  • When you last moved the car, did you only move for a few yards from a cold start? I've done this before and started the engine the next day, by turning the ignition key and pumping/pressing hard on the accelerator at the same time. Found the car spluttered to life with a puff of blue smke off the exhaust!!!
It's all to do with petrol on a sensor (that's as technical as I'm capable of being!!).

    Thank's for your reply.

The immobiliser light goes out once you put the ignition on to second place (dash lights all come on)
I don't have another key as only got one when I brought it.

When I try to start it the engine turns over but makes no attempt to fire or even start, just turns, but if I press the accelerator to the floor or pump it sounds like it's trying to fire on one cylinder but the others won't join in.

The car is a V6 by the way
  • sounds like the cold may have got to it initially and in trying to start it you may have flooded the engine, continous trying depletes the battery and causes further flooding/flat battery. The best you can do at the mo is pull the plugs out, dry them off carefully with a flame (gas or blow lamp )-needless to say BE VERY CAREFUL. or replace with a new set of plugs, Recharge your battery over night and try again tommorrow:).

Yes, only drove it for about 100 yards to put it from the road onto the drive and then did'nt run the engine and turned it off.

I have tried pressing the accelerator all the way to the floor and pumping it and trying to catch it as it turns over then you hear it trying to fire but it is no where near enough power to fire the engine up.

    Thank's.

I have the battery of charge and will try again tomorrow but the only thing is I really don't think I could even replace the spark plugs or leads myself as the car is a Mondeo V6 and you have to take the inlet manifold off to get access to the leads and plugs.

I had the same problem with my car; the trick is not to even touch the accelerator and expect to turn it over for nearly a minute. The more you pump the gas the worse you're making the situation!

It's probably flooded. That's what I did to my car, moved it from the road to the drive when cold. I didn't think you could flood a modern car, but apparently you can and this is how to do it!

  • i would assume pumping the pedal is not needed on a newer car

Thing what I find strange is that the car started fine when I went to move it and park it on the drive but when I went out today I tried to start it and nothng, I didn't pump or press the accelerator and left it turning the first time for around 30 seconds and then switched everything off and then tried again for around a minute and it still made no attempt to start it just turns there is no life there.

It only attempts to start when you press or lightly/heavily pump the accelerator and even then it's no where near enough to start the car; if you didn't pump or press the accelerator it wouldn't even attempt to fire.

    :confused::confused:
  • Also when you leave the car for around an hour or so and then come back and try and start it, the first time you turn the key and the engine turns you can almost instantly smell fuel and then the smell goes as you carry on turning the engine.
I have checked the fuel line and it's in tack
