I have been through this so many times, and it never gets any easier ... just take time to grieve for your friend and one day you will be able to look back on the happier times ... it takes time, but you will.
When my last dog was pts, my vet gave me a print out of this poem ..
If it should be that I grow weak
and pain should keep me from my sleep.
Then you must do what must be done,
for this last battle can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest,
your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years,
what is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so.
The time has come, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend
and please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see,
the kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
from pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve it must be you
who has this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years.
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.
Sending lots of love and hugs ... xxxx0 -
Brings the time I had to have my dog put down all back to me...I and many others here understand what you are going through.
After a while the painful feelings are replaced by happy memories of time spent together and the joy of having such a selfless friend.
My thoughts are with you (((hugs))).
[edit] One thing I might add is to advise other pet owners also be with their pets when they are put to sleep, its the one thing I regret that I didn't stay with my dog till the end...at the time I could not face it but is has been a regret ever since. It is a nice thought of yours to have the vet visit your home, I wish I had known i could have done the same to cause the least distress.0 -
I have seen it from both sides, having worked at a vet's surgery ... all my animals were pts at home, with me laying on the floor with them. They all went very calmly, with no distress at all.
I've seen the other side of it too, when the owner has left them on their own in a strange place with strange people ... not going to dwell on that cos I don't want to upset anyone but I 100% support what Shambler said ... it is very quick and painless so if you can just steel yourself to hold your pet so they are relaxed and be with him or her through that, then it really will make for a less stressful passing for them.
.. and if you don't think you can manage to do that, then please ask a friend who your pet knows well if they would be there and stay with them ... it really does make the world of difference to them.0 -
Hello everyone.
Barney went to sleep yesterday very peacefully. I held his head and stroked him telling him how much i loved him and thanked him for all the wonderful times he gave me.
It was so difficult but i knew i had to be strong and think of him and push my selfishness away to one side.
The vet was fantasic and gave me a big hug. The nurse was crying almost as much as i was!
I am glad he was at home and that i found the courage to be with him.
I just feel empty and numb at the moment but i am sure that time will eventually heal some of the pain.
The 'firsts' were difficult like dinner time last night and getting up this morning.
I felt lost at lunchtime today because for the last 12 years i have always gone home to feed him and let him out. I guess i will try to get used to it all.
Everyone on here has been so nice and although it makes me cry to read your posts it does help in a way, so thank you everyone.
I didn't realise how supportive a stranger could be.
I will probably pop back from time to time. I enjoy reading some of your stories.
Well, bye bye for now from me & barney. x0 -
