What an awful time for you

It is always an extremely sad time to make that decision - but you have made the right decision for Barney.
Spend your last couple of days with lots of cuddles, Barney's favourite toys and of course his favourite food. He knows that you love him and that you'r doing the best thing for him.
My thoughts are with you.

My eyes are leaking. You are being very brave and have made the right decision for your lovely Barney. I am not 'religious' but I hope you will find teh strength from somewhere to be brave for him when the time comes.
I've had two dogs put to sleep at home, and they passed over very peacefully having been fed chocolate biscuits at the time.
Remember - better too early than too late. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
so sorry to hear your news. x
If I Could Talk
You're giving me a special gift,
So sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days,
Your courage makes me proud.
But really, love is knowing
When your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts
Will only be in vain.
So looking deep into your eyes,
Beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic, that will
Once more make me whole.
The strength that you possess,
Is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done,
For it's the only way.
That strength is why I've followed you,
And chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years...
My partner 'til the end.
Please, understand just what this gift,
You're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost,
And all my dignity.
You take a stand on my behalf,
For that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right,
For I believe it too.
So one last time, I breathe your scent,
And through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you,
To now grant me this appeal.
Cut the leash that holds me here,
Dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog,
My pain and struggle done.
And don't despair my passing,
For I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart,
And memory I'll always stay.
I'll be there watching over you,
Your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run,
...a young dog once again.now proud mum to 3 handsome boys :j latest one born 10/10/11:j0 -
What a lovely poem
I can't say much to you because I am crying but I'm sending you hugs and kind thoughts xx0 -
I am here crying for you too, my heart goes out to you. The hardest job in the world even when you know its the right thing to do for your beloved pet. Will be thinking of you on Wed. Take care and if you can bear to, please come back and let us know how you are. When I have lost pets I have found pet forums to be such a comfort.

I'm here crying again too.
Thank you all so much for you words of comfort.
Mirrorimage, what a lovely poem. I am desperately trying to believe the words at the moment.
I still have a doubt in the back of my mind, questioning myself. He looked at me this morning with his big brown puppy dog eyes and i felt so bad.
Just want to get today over with now, so i can have some quality time tomorrow0 -
My heart goes out to you.
I already had damp eyes before I read the poem ... now I am in full flow.
It is an appallingly difficult thing to do, but you do it because you love Barney too much to let him suffer.
Hugs to you and Barney.

xxThank you for this site :jNow OH and I are both retired, MSE is a Godsend0 -
I am so sorry for you.I had to this for my two tabby boys who were suffering from different forms of cancer and had started to deteriorate rather quickly. After 15 years of them being my constant companions they were gone.It was horrendous but had to be done and broke my heart.
Can I suggest you have someone with you as even though my vet stayed with me for an hour afterwards I just collapsed(literally) with shock after he left and I shut the front door and was on my own.You realy will need someone.
My best wishes go out to you.xxx0 -
someone sent me the poem ( so not my own work) when we were having to have our maxy boy put to sleep and it really had meaning for me, you are doing the right thing for oyur dog, he is unwell and needs your help, its so sad and not a day goes by that we dont miss max and now have another two rescue dogs, not to replace him ut to fill a gap in our home and hearts.now proud mum to 3 handsome boys :j latest one born 10/10/11:j0

So sorry to hear what you are going through. It is not so long ago since we were in the same situation and took the same course of action with the vet. There is no easy way but it is the last kind thing you have done for your cherished boy. You have tried to cause him the least distress too.
Thinking of you tonight0
