possibly the bt service you've signed up for...even if you haven't quite got it up and running as yet, bt have "claimed" the line for an ADSL service........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

LLU xDSL presence at your exchange
You are connected to the Kineton telephone exchange.
The following table details the availability of LLU services at your location.
AOL is not yet available in your area
O2 / Be Unlimited is not yet available in your area
Bulldog (C&W) is not yet available in your area
TalkTalk (CPW) has not yet unbundled your exchange
Sky Broadband / Easynet is not yet available in your area
Edge Telecom is not yet available in your area
Entanet is not yet available in your area
Lumison is not yet available in your area
Newnet is not yet available in your area
Node4 is not yet available in your area
Pipex is not yet available in your area
Smallworld Media is not yet available in your area
Tiscali is not yet available in your area
Tiscali TV is not yet available in your area
Orange is not yet available in your area
WB Internet is not yet available in your area
Zen is not yet available in your area
See what I mean??!
basically, it means that no other ISP has put it's equipment into the bt exchange, so you can only use a BT phone line to get your broadband, so even if you got a "normal" bb service from, say, o2 or tiscali or anyone else, you'd still be paying your phone line rental to BT..although it deffo looks like your choice of providers is going to be VERY limited.
edit:- yours is a market 1 exchange, which looks like bt is the only provider able to offer bb services...although it's due for switchover to 21CN in mid-2009..this should improve your chances of a better bb service (although not guaranteed if you're so far from the exchange, unfortunately)......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Some further developments however. A manager in 'escalations' has been really helpful, has had further checks on the line done remotely and informs me that I do indeed need a new Master socket. A BT Open reach engineer is coming on Monday!! I am just keeping my fingers crossed that I am nearing the end of this saga.
Well after doing the line check we now know a bit more about your problem. Let us know the outcome of your BT engineer visit on Monday. BT should at least be able to inform you what your line is capable of and if they can supply broadband they will do what is necessary to get you connected.
I don't agree with GunJack's comment "although it deffo looks like your choice of providers is going to be VERY limited" because if BT can provide you with ADSL, then any number of other ISP's also could. BT Openreach are contracted to do the same work for any other ISP as they do for BT retail.
"However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection"
The other service could be simply the fact that you have applied to get broadband or because you have an incompatible service like DACS, which would need to be removed by BT before you can get ADSL provisioned. Even if you have the Light User Scheme, you would have to ask BT to remove it before getting broadband.

espresso - I'm basing my assumptions on the fact that the exchange is a market 1 exchange, i.e. not deregulated, and according to samknows' guide, this implies that only bt can provide bb services via this exchange. If this is an incorrect assumption, sorry, but from the available info.....just trying to be helpful......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

From samknows:This exchange has BT Wholesale as the sole provider of broadband services.
Agreed no LLU presence but BT retail is just another ISP, like any of the other hundreds of ISP's that provide service using BT Wholesale ADSL. e.g. there are 54 listed here and a few of those provide their service using their own LLU equipment, as well as using BT Wholesale in locations where they have to.

Yes, will do. Thanks.

Good Luck!and have been here a fair few years. Thanks so much to all for your help, at least I have a better idea what to look for/ask on Monday. Incidentally, my next door neighbour gets BB all right but having started with AOL they had to switch to BT as service poor (line dropped frequently etc) with AOL.
Anyway, assuming I can use something after engineers visit on Mon  I will report back.
Thanks again.0 -

DAC's is when they effectively share one exchange line between two customers. This is sometimes necessary when there is a shortage of ines to the local exchange. BT have to remove this as it is incompatible with broadband. More info here. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Hey, guess what??
Yep, I am now finally on BB.
Really helpful BT Openreach guy who agreed there was a problem somewhere in the house with wiring so fitted the new NTE 5A WITH the filter and Bobs your uncle, here I am.
Can't tell you how delighted I am to be able to access the internet during the day at in fact less cost than I was paying for reduced hours only.
The speeds not bad either. Well, compared to what I was used to:eek: .
So many many thanks to all of you who so patiently helped me on this issue.

Good news. What speed are you getting? Not that it really matters in comparison to dial-up! speed tester here
Remember that now that you are up and running, after your minimum contract term with BT, you could then switch to another cheaper ISP. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
That was interesting espresso. That was the same site that the engineer tried to do a speed test on whilst he was here and he couldn't get the site to load. He said they must be having problems on the site.
Well, I have just tried it from your link and it still doesn't load. When I click on the 'my results' tab and then click on 'test again' it shows a whole lot of nothing! either 'n/a' or simply no data showing. Any thoughts?
The engineer told me from his own test equipment I was getting just over 1/2 Mb (half) and that within a fortnight this could well creep up to just short of 3/4 Mb.
He also said the speed restriction is because we only have 0.5mm cable and that even if BT upgraded it to 0.6mm I would see a tremendous improvement but that they are not going to do that! Great service eh!!!
The loop attenuation was 64.5 dB
SNR margin was 10.50 dB
Output power is 16.50 dB
Capacity 61%
Max bit rate 1024 kbs
Loop length 4464 metres.
That was as far as I got squinting over his shoulder at his computer when he was running the end tests.
Oh yes and 63 dB line loss at nearest sub station?:rotfl:0
