Hi espresso. Thanks for flagging up further responses here since I last checked.

(Not sure why I haven't got your post to come up under 'quote', sorry.)

Would you be kind enough to tell me what a 'bell wire' actually does?
As best I can remember, the engineer said if he left it disconnected then my downstairs telephone extension wouldn't work, i would have to run an external wire down the stairs and around the walls if I wanted to be able to use a telephone elsewhere in the house!

Now I'm really sorry but I don't know what you mean by a 'line check'. Could you please guide me to how I do one and where I would find the link to one? Thanks:o

Some further developments however. A manager in 'escalations' has been really helpful, has had further checks on the line done remotely and informs me that I do indeed need a new Master socket. A BT Open reach engineer is coming on Monday!! I am just keeping my fingers crossed that I am nearing the end of this saga.

Would still really appreciate replies as above if you wouldn't mind?:T

New one to me, never heard of that before.
Well I promise you it is my experience! If you think there are any providers out there that I may have overlooked I'd love to know.

I don't really understand it either as logic says it is silly but everytime I ask for a provider to confirm that they can in fact offer me Broadband, at ANY speed(!) they do some checks and come back time and again and say, oops, no, actually we can't! Something about my distance from the exchange.
    Ah well.:o

Well if your line is ADSL enabled, it does nothing as it's redundant.

Now I'm really sorry but I don't know what you mean by a 'line check'. Could you please guide me to how I do one and where I would find the link to one? Thanks:o

Did you click on the link in post #10?

Enter your details and it should give you a summary. Then if you click on the BT ADSL button it will give information about what you could expect to get using ADSL including the distance to your local exchange.

Clicking on the LLU xDSL button will show the availability of any LLU services at your exchange.

See what info you get from the above line check and remember that there are hundreds of ADSL ISP's to choose from on a BT line. see here for some of the many options other than BT.

    Check out PlusNet.

It's owned by BT but outperforms it by every criterion (including price).

    Check out O2 Broadband

It's not owned by BT and outperforms it and PlusNet in every criterion (including price) as many do, with no silly download limits!

A bell wire allows old telephones to ring. It's generally not needed for modern phones.

Er, not on every criterion (including price). (And, of course, this is a money saving website...)

On an unbundled exchange, which, clearly hers would appear to be, O2's more expensive (unless you want to download huge amounts of data). Particularly if you don't have an O2 mobile 'phone and would thus not receive the £5 discount.

    PlusNet - £15 a month, ADSL Max, 15 GB a month. (Or £20 a month for 30 GB).

    O2 - £22.50 a month (£17.50 a month if you've got an O2 mobile 'phone), ADSL Max, unlimited.

There's also the fact that O2's contracts are for 12 months minimum, whereas PlusNet's are monthly rolling.

Obviously, if her exchange were unbundled, O2 would be the one to go for.

If O2 ever does unbundle her exchange and she's on PlusNet she could then switch with one month's notice.

I think you'll also find that it's for its unbundled service that O2 wins its accolades (rightly).

Whilst I have no intention of arguing for one ISP when compared to another, it's not as simple as that.

PlusNet don't give £60 cashback like O2 broadband neither do they give free connection/activation.

Yes O2 may be a 12 month contract but PlusNets small print says:
    Standard Costs

    - Activation (Available with all Broadband Your Way Options) - £40
    - 4-Port Wireless Router (Available with Broadband Your Way Options 1,2,3 and Pro) - £29.99*
    - Switching to Plusnet from another broadband provider (Available with all Broadband Your Way Options) - £14.99
    - * On October 22nd 2008 we cut the cost of the Wireless Router to £29.99. If you signed up to this offer before October 22nd 2008 you'll need to pay £50 if you leave within 12 months.
    and
    Special Offer: Free wireless router

    1. This offer is open to any new customer who takes 'Broadband Your Way' Option 1 during the special offer period.
    2. A postage and packaging cost of £6.99 (inc-vat) will be applied to all customers who take the free 4-port wireless option.
    3. This special offer ends on 20th January 2009 but we have the right to remove this offer or any other offer in conjunction with this offer at any point.
    4. The offer consists of one free 4-port wireless router if you choose to stay with us for the 12-month minimum period - any other hardware purchases within this period will be charged at the full amount.
and so on, so read the small print very carefully!

  • Typical BT "engineer"

Simple problem simple answer. The master socket face plate needs to be changed for an NTE2000. From this the engineer can run a cable straight to your router. This filters the DSL at the faceplate meaning you can have as many extensions as you like. It sounds as though you are a fair way from the exchange, BT (or any BB provider) can reduce your broadband profile to increase the margin. In laymans terms if they are trying to send 8MB BB to you you need to have a good margin, more than 12db is the minimum, if this is not do-able they can drop the line speed down until the margin increases. So this with the addition of the NTE2000 will allow you to have reliable broadband. As a side note the NTE2000 will allow you to have properly wired extensions bell wire and all :D

    Hope this helps

    Regards Simon

*edit* forgot to mention that the NTE2000 does away with the need for any telephone filters, so your phones can be plugged straight into the sockets

*edit 2* also forgot to mention that he should check the other extensions to make sure they are not mini masters, if they are they should be changed for extension faceplates
  • herewith result of line wire checky thing!!
    BT ADSL broadband availability

You are connected to the Kineton telephone exchange.
ADSL is available in your area

Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
According to BT Wholesale, your line is very unlikely to be able to support ADSL, although a 256kbps service may be available.

    Standard ADSL RAG results

    You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
    You cannot receive 1Mbps ADSL
You may be able to receive 512kbps ADSL
    (Engineer visit likely)
You may be able to receive 256kbps ADSL
    (Engineer visit likely)

You are approximately 5.37km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!
However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.
» Your BT ADSL code is: REAEGEC
» Matched result using the phone you provided

As you can see although at first it says I am in a broadband enabled area then it says as above.
Anyone offer any enlightenment on what it means by 'there is another service on your line'????
Not that I am aware of!!
Thanks to all for being so patient.:o
  • And here's the second bit....
