Personally I cant bear my local Netto, its a hovel, but Aldi is great for fruit & veg, and Lidl is good for most things. Go on, give it a try.. I can highly recommend the chocolates!

Beggars can't be choosers!!
I have: Tesco, Asda and Aldi near me and I go to all of them; The first 2 I look for items with yellow reduced stickers, be it because they're near the nd of their shelf life or because their packaging is bent. And I go to Aldi for a few interesting bits and bobs, like posh Italian ham and the like.
My personal preference is actually Waitrose but I no longer live near one and cannot afford it.0 -
I have used Aldi and / or Lidl's for years, one thing is certain, they are much busier now than they have ever been.
I cannot be bothered with the Tesco / Asda stores, too big, take too much time, overpriced apart from a few headline offers.0 -
I think it depends on the area that the shops cater to. We only have one big Tescos that I could go to but I don't go as it's full of chavs and the selection isn't what it is in the one near my sister & bil. On the other hand the Asda near me is much nicer than a lot of other asdas I've been to. I wish I had an aldi near me but don't have one.Never let your sucesses go to your head and never let your failures go to your heart.:beer:0

Im a student, and i live rnear to an Asda, Tesco, Aldi and Sainsburys.
IMO, Aldi is a waste of time. Expensive on a lot of things and a rubbish choice for veggies.
I tend to go in Asda, they are great on fresh pizzas and have one of the best ranges of quorn and booze!OnePoll - £12.40, Yougov - £1.00, VO - £24.25, youdoo miles - 24292, MHF - £0.00
Not much, but its a start :rotfl:

We have Aldi and Lidl opposite each other - very convenient.
I used to use Waitrose often because I could count on the quality. In these more pressing times I use Aldi and Lidl frequently. They both do free-range chicken and Lidl do a great range of organic veg.
I wouldn't touch their meat but lobsters for 5 quid and a kilo of langoustines for 8 quid is incredible value.
I wouldn't touch Asda with a ten foot pole.0 -
Just tried Aldi and Lidl for the full batch of shopping for the first time. So far, everything from there has been great! I was expecting the mantra of "you get what you pay for" to come into force, but so far the quality of everything has been fine - if not better in some cases (certainly far better than some of the "Tesco Value" or "Asda Smartprice" lines) and you seem to save roughly 20-50% compared to the supermarkets / branded stuff.
If you have a nervous disposition I would recommend shopping during off-peak hours rather than at the weekend / straight after work, as with the recession I found Aldi in particular to be very busy at the weekend. It was very difficult to stop and look at anything as every aisle was like a motorway and as soon as you did so you'd cause a traffic jam! Don't let that put you off though, they might not all be as crowded and if you go off-peak it should be fine. As they get used to the increased custom, they'll probably expand. Also, Lidl was almost eerily quiet despite a decent handful of people wandering around
I have to admit though, I see it as an exploration adventure. It's not so much a "beans are on aisle 27" layout in those places but more of a "wander round the outside, then the two middle aisles, then to the checkout" one. You shouldn't have trouble finding anything as it's just basically a couple of long aisles and everything else around the outer wall - you can see everything that's in the whole supermarket within about 5 minutes - or at least that's how it is with ours.
It's about changing your mindset from "I want Heinz Beanz" and locating the exact brand on aisle 27 to "I want baked beans" and picking up the only brand on your way around, and giving them a try. 9 times out of 10 you don't notice the difference, but if you find yourself being particularly fussy about baked beans then you do the majority of the shopping in Alda/Lidl and pick up the extra bits in Tesco.0 -
The Sun do a supermarket price comparison every Saturday and Aldi is more often than not the most expensive for staple goods. Personally I find Asda best for choice, value and quality but Tesco's closer so I tend to go there for convienience. The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water
And I look like a tramp and tramps like us

When I was a student I had a lot of my food delivered-when a bunch of us got together to order, the delivery cost was cheaper than getting on the bus to go to the shop myself! If you do this, you don't have to worry about shop layout, and you can take advantage of the BOGOF offers and split the price with a friend-this used to be a good moneysaver for my friends & I-and we could afford tastier food. Once the Tesco delivery man accidently packed a 1KG Tesco Finest lasagne in one of our bags, which they let us keep-greatest free student meal ever!Best 2018 wins: £1500, £500 John Lewis voucherBest 2019 wins: 18 of the latest DVDsBest 2020 wins: £100 cash 2021 wins: 130 books 2021 wins: Jubilee silver necklace 2023: 8xfootball shirts, Spar vouchers, £200 Tesco voucher,0

I'm sorry for perhaps being rude, but I can't stop laughing at the thought that you might think that you are being posh when you shop in Tesco. Honestly, shopping there is nothing to be snobbish about.
It's a cheap and nasty shop who started on the basis "pile it high, and sell it cheap". Not much has changed over the years, they still sell poor quality food, it's just that they've managed to persuade the easily deluded they are (a) cheap and (b) quality. Neither are true.0
