Supermarket snob

Right, im a student, running out of money... fast

Near me i have a tesco, aldi netto, and wilko's

Im not a fan of the later 3, and only go in tescos

Next term... lidl, sainsburys and asda will be available too

Is it really all that much cheaper in lidl, aldi etc? I dont care about healthiness... but cheapness and tasyness are key

I'll stop being a snob if its proved their cheap :P

    Hi pinkbubblegum,

Lidl and Aldi are much cheaper than mainstream supermarkets for many things but it might be difficult to get all that you need in them.

If you have a look at these threads they'll give you an idea of what people buy there:

Great What/What Not to Buy at Lidl, Aldi and Netto Hunt

    Aldi Virgin

    Aldi or Lidl?

    is Aldi any good....

Aldi/Lidl/Tesco/Asda ??? Which would you choose??

    Aldi or Lidl?

What does everyone think of Lidl and Aldi?

What's hot and what's not at Aldi/Lidl/Netto Article Discussion Area

    Netto. What to buy.

If you search on the shop but don't drop board there are more threads but too many to list here I'm afraid.

As this is a shopping query I'll move your thread over to the Shop but Don't drop board where you should get more replies.

I can totally see where your comming from! I am afriad of Aldi and Lidl too- they have flies in the one near me! yet ppl swear by them! I am plucking up the courage to try again. I did try just this week but a kid threw up outside and I took it as a bad omen, got back on the bus and three stops later I am at Tescos....

If its any help I can make a pact with you? I will if you will? could keep me from playing chicken again!!
  • Asda and Tesco drive me round the twist - too big, too many people, too much time and takes too long! Far too much stress just to buy food!

I can be in and out of lidl with a full shop in well under 1/2 hour without rushing - far less stress. just remember to take your own shopping bags or be prepared to buy some re-useable bags cheaply there.

When I lived abroad (holland) they were not seen as a cheap shop, just a supermarket, and their quality is actualy good, but a lot of the food may seem unfamiliar at first as its european.

Once you get to know what you like its an excellent shop in my opinion!

For my 2p's worth: My Aunty, who lives in a £1.2mill house in Surrey swears by Netto cleaning products, buys tesco value loo roll (£1.20 for 12 rolls) and regularly stocks up at Lidl for canned, carton & dry goods. Also she reckons Lidl luxury choc-chip icecream is the best around.

Lidl/Aldi fruit & veg are usually great quality & Aldi anti-wrinkle cream was voted the best recently in a blind testing.

Lidl prices are about the same as the big dupermarkets'* own value brands - but the quality is MUCH higher than those same value products.

Re. layouts: you'll spend less time in Lidl/Aldi/Netto as they don't stock 17 types of rice. They are in my experience very clean but the shopping experience is simple and utilitarian. Most Lidl stores have the same kind of layout - pop, juices, squashes by the entrance then through dry goods, fridges at the end wall, freezers at the ends of the aisles and fruit and veg at the end of the 1st aisle.

Heres a secret: those who are rich are only rich 'cos they don't waste money on snobby stuff from Waitrose!!

Remember that most of those who are snobby about supermarkets are usually up to their eyeballs in consumer debt...

    * not a mis-spelling: they dupe you into buying crap you don't need/want!
  • I cannot agree that their fruit is great. We have had mangos and avacados recently that were like bricks.

Have you seen the Irish ads for Lidl, they are funny

Personally I cant bear my local Netto, its a hovel, but Aldi is great for fruit & veg, and Lidl is good for most things. Go on, give it a try.. I can highly recommend the chocolates!
  • I fail to understand how anybody can be "scared" of a supermarket.

Great post, btw, joolzred. Spot on all the way through. I especially like the "dupermarket" bit and then then your hints at a certain correlation between wealth, consumer debt and shopping attitudes.
