The Sun do a supermarket price comparison every Saturday and Aldi is more often than not the most expensive for staple goods. Personally I find Asda best for choice, value and quality but Tesco's closer so I tend to go there for convienience.
..And you actually believe what the Sun tells you?:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I don't believe most of what they say but I do believe them about this. I used to go to Aldi quite a bit but rarely go there anymore because I don't find them to be either cheap or good quality. I can do much better in both Asda and Tesco although I will admit it takes longer to go round. I honestly don't understand why people believe that Aldi is cheap:huh: ?The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water

I don't get what people see in Tesco.
I don't like their food, its overpriced for what it is.
I do like Sainsburys and also Aldi for the continental hams, salamis etc0 -
Ifind Aldi cheap and lovely quality, except the bubble bathwhich isn't bubbley enough!!
Sympathise entirely with the panic attacks, horrid things! Good luck with your trip. Be sure to try the brioche with choc chips in Aldi!0 -

I've got to apologise to you for being inconsiderate. I'm sorry I overread your second post in this thread, the one in which you mentioned the panic attacks that supermarkets cause you. I never meant to offend anybody suffering from genuine anxiety.
Aldi should actually be ok for you. The shops are relatively small, there are only around 700 articles, the layout with 4 aisles is simple and clear, and things are always in the same place. It's certainly easier for orientation than the large superstores with their 30 aisles and 15,000 different products. Once you've been there once or twice, you'll know where everything is.0 -
I shop in a range of supermarkets - Aldi (most often), Sainsburys and Cosco, though I also dip into Asda and Tesco too. I don't choose Aldi because I have to but I do think they have some interesting good quality food, if you can pick your way through the store. And their moisturiser is wonderful (and very cheap) as is their handwash.
If you notice cars in the car park, the old bangers have been replaced by Volvos and 4x4s these days which is interesting.
Any supermarket can be overwhelming at first. The budget ones are smaller than most, and you could always start with just one aisle, such as fruit and veg, and see what you think.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
My Father, who only ever shopped at Waitrose or M&S, has suddenly developed the Aldi bug. God I am impressed as he used to infer that I was buying poor quality from Lidl. What goes around comes around.

Cheap and good value equate to two different things.
Aldi is excellent value and their products are also excellent quality, far better than the mainly nasty tat that Tesco sell.0 -
I've not seen the comparisons in question but I'd say the problem with comparisons is they're probably comparing named brands, and for those yes Tesco are cheaper as they can buy them in greater quantities.
Places like Aldi are more about letting go of brand loyalty (which you often pay a premium for) and trying out that unknown label you've never heard of from Somewhere in Europe. Even things like Stella Artois are available under a different name for a fraction of the cost, which just shows how often you're paying for the brand name.
If they're comparing Aldi/Lidl against Tesco Value/Asda Smartprice then yeah... Tesco and Asda are probably cheaper there too. But as for the quality... my experience of the big supermarkets' cheapest stuff varies, to put it politely. Sure, vinegar is vinegar (and Aldi vinegar vs Tesco Value is about the same price I noticed) but when you get onto more variable things like meats, chocolates etc my impression of both Aldi and Lidl are so far much better. You can get cheap meat in Tesco that barely resembles meat, and cheap meat in Aldi that is like the finest quality. As Inactive says, cheap and value are different things.pinkbubblegum wrote: »Im not scared of a supermarket in general, i get panic attacks when shopping for anything, i have to be obsessively focussed.
Christmas shopping must drive you nuts. Heck it's enough to make me dread it for the whole 3 month run-up during which the shops kindly "remind" us about it, and I'm relatively "normal" (for lack of a better word; I'm not saying you're not normal!)pandora205 wrote:If you notice cars in the car park, the old bangers have been replaced by Volvos and 4x4s these days which is interesting.
It is, aye. I wonder if this is a reflection on how widespread the crunch/recession is hitting people, or that people are just curious because they've heard so much about Lidl and Aldi recently. For me it was mostly the latter, and I find the places quite fascinating, but it's always good to save money. That's why we're on this forum0
