I have a Clio 1.4 16v and it's time to change the timing belt, I have 3 quotes ranging from £600 to £870. A hell of a lot of money for changing effectly a part worth £20ish. Ok I've come to accept that Renault insist that as well as the belt all the pulleys should be changed and also the water pump. However recently garages are saying they must also change the alternator belt and pulleys which is what's adding another £200 to the bill. A bill of £400 I can live with, can anyone advice if the alternator belt and pulleys also need changing or are the garages just trying it on?
Its not just the belt its all the tensioners and there a bit of a pain to do, thats not cheap price but does depend when you are in the uk
change the alternator belts for definite and ideally the tensioner depends if it needs it but unless its 100% change it they break a lot and that means damaged valves etc as they take out the cam belt at the same time0 -

I know that the Clio Sport is an absolute nightmare to change cam belt - but as yours isn't that model, I think that they are overcharging you.
You have to change the belt when you change the cam belts its practice and recommended it should never be reused
as for the tensioner well they do fail and for the cost its worth changing them unless there in good condition as it has to last another 72k/ 5 years
As for the sports cambelt being a pain the 1.4 an 1.6 16V aren't that much easier same design engine0 -

You haver to change the belt as part of the cam belt most places forget but you have to as due to design of the cam belt cover a broken aux belt will damage the cam belt 99% of the time so new valves etc0 -

I now have 5 quotes and with the advice on here it looks like I need to get everything done, cost £800. I also need sone other work doing so am looking at a bill of around £1000 plus MOT is due in 5 months.
As I was leaving one garage I saw they had a lovely BMW 3 compact, price wise it was expensive but I thought what the hell and asked the saleman for a price to change against my clio. He wants £2500, at first I thought he'd made a mistake as it seemed too cheap.
I'm very very tempted, anyone have any views :
I'll be changing a 7 year old clio that needs £1000 spending on it, 52,000 miles against a BMW Compact 3 pack with all the goodies including leather but it's 8 years old and has 93,000 miles but will come with 6 months warranty and full MOT.
Took the BMW for a test drive and loved it :cool:0 -

What exactly are you having done that's going to cost £800?
I think it's probably wise to get a 6th quote before making any decisions."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
