I don`t even know what a hard disk looks like...never mind knowing how to plug it in!!!!! think I need to go to night school lol
Just wish it would come back on for an hour then it can pack in forever..0 -
The 'motherboard. is what everything connects to for the computer to work. The cpu (The main processor that does all the calculations) sits on top of the motherboard, and al the extra bits fit to the motherboard either directly or via cables. The hard drive stores the operating system (vista or XP) and all the files.
First up I suggest booting up and keep pressing the 'DEL' key as soon as you press the main power button. If nothing comes up then its either the motherboard OR the power supply.
Power supplies are dead easy to fit and you can get one for around 20 quid or so.
If its the motherbard then your looking at a new computer
If the 'bios' DOES come on screen, then its looking like the hard drive has failed:idea:0 -
Hi
Been messing about and doing what you suggesed, its just come on but took ages.... can you possibly tell me how to get the info from my docs onto a cd as still got no internet so can`t send it to the laptop. I`m hoping it doesn`t go off, don`t know why its just come on now!0 -
The computers working?
That points to a faulty power supply then (if you keep 'trying' they usually power up eventually due to 'warming up')
http://www.imgburn.com/
Create folders and put all the files you want to store in them
upto approx 750 meg if using cds
or 4.35 gig if using dvds
Run imageburn and goto BURN FILES
select the folder you want to burn and put the blank disc in your drive and follow the onscreen instructions (Just keep clicking 'OK' should suffice):idea:0 -
Thank you, but still can`t get internet access so can`t down load anything. Is there anything that might be already there I can use.0
-
duh!
Sorry, completely forgot about your 'original' problem
Create the folder(s)
Put a blank cd or dvd in your drive
If you COPY and PASTE to the dvd drive under 'my computer' it should (Hopefully) burn it:idea:0 -
Thank you, its running at the moment, but as there is so much its only taking half of whats on my docs, so will do the other half then run thru and delete whats not needed and do it again, so I have another back up.
Do you know if its possible to get my work programme (it was wirtten many years ago and bot possible to get it on disc) from floppy to cd or if the computer goes willl I loose it?
I`m not going to turn the desk top off again until I have copied everything about 50 times.
Saw a lovely Sony desktop in m & s the other day, but need a second mortage to buy it..0 -
If you can copy the work programme from the floppy to your hard drive then yes (Right click and copy, then PASTE to either the desktop or C drive). Just burn it as you have with the docs.
No need to delete anything of your hard drive
In fact, as far as I can tell, the only things you need for your computer to work properly are a new power supply and a new USB wireless gizmo:idea:0 -
Hi,
All my docs and my pictures copied! I`m so relieved. Am going too try the floppy discs later after a few glasses of wine.....
This week am going to ponder on whether to repair or just cut my losses and get a new one, this dell is so noisy and has been since I got it there must be quieter smaller machines around that are a bit faster! Will I still need a new dongle thingie?
I am really grateful for your help, but may be back later when I try the floppy discs..... on a serious note I couldn`t have got this far without our help and I really am grateful.0 -
No worries katies mum
If its 'noisy' then you may be as well cutting your losses
It could just be you need a new fan (a fiver) or it could be the hard drives on its way out (meaning a new hard drive AND an operating system for it, as well as a new power supply etc)
All laptops (At least that I know of) come with wireless built in. But you can easily get a desktop with wireless built in too (My dell has)
If you ever need a hand choosing a new computer ill be happy to help (Though youd be just as well starting a new post on here, as theres so many different deals its unbelievable):idea:0
